Series 7 filming until December, plus other tidbits
The Guardian has a new interview with Matt Smith in which he discusses returning to Cardiff to start filming the brand new series of Doctor Who.
Production will officially begin a week today on Monday 20th February, with Scottish director Saul Metzstein starting the proceedings. “I am very excited,” Matt said. “We’ve got four or five scripts which look in really good shape. The casting’s going really well as well. I found out a lovely bit of news this morning actually, about someone who’ll be in it.”
He also confirms that they’ve “a long shoot” ahead of them, with filming scheduled to be completed in December. Commenting on the winter Cardiff night shoots coming his way, he revealed: “One of the scripts, a lot of it is outdoors. But hey, there are worse ways to spend your evenings than outdoors being the Doctor and running away from monsters!”
Series 7, airing in the autumn, has been described as being “the biggest series yet”.
But if filming finishes in December, we’ll most likely get half a series this autumn and the rest next year. :( Or maybe I’ve got this wrong.
@MagicTimeTravel
No, that’s true. The only confirmation we’ve had is that 14 eps will be filmed this year, not that they’ll be shown this year.
@MagicTimeTravel
Who knows. If anything, filming from late Nov-Dec will be for the XMAS special.
@TSG
Did Moffat not say we’d get them all this year, or was he talking about filming?
@George
Ah, that could be it.
so all we’re gonna get this year is the series 8 christmas special then? cause we had series 7 christmas special then its gonna go to the series 8 xmas special then back to series 7 part 1 then part 2 then back to series 8. quite confusing to be honest.
what i thought moffat confirmed we would get them all this year to watch this is all very confussing as this says its finished shooting in december unless they show the first half while still filming the second half but i dont think this will be so :(
Episodes 1 – 7 will air beginning around the end of September/beginning of October, concluding around the end of November. There will be a short break and then a Christmas special will air, most likely on Christmas day. There will then be another short break, after which episodes 8 – 13 will air beginning about the beginning of February 2013.
(The numbers above could alter though, due to the Christmas special. 14 episodes total will air. The Christmas episode may end up being considered episode 8, followed in February by episodes 9 – 14.)
The Christmas special would have to have completed filming by September so that all editing, special effects etc. can be finished by it’s Christmas air date.
That is my theory and my theory is that.
Lets hope the new season is not as dreadful as the garbage that made up last years effort! Let’s also hope SM remember this is Doctor Who and not his part time job after Sherlock. The 50th Anniversary is coming up and I have my doubts that he will be able to bring anything remotely special to the series,
@Professor Zed
That does seem quite likely…though I suppose we can hope that the filming past September is for the 50th! Ah, well. A seven-episode run is better than no Who at all!
@Steve
A negative post from you?! WOAH!
I always assumed the series would be split; it’s not the end of the world, just the way the series will broadcast now, over winter.
Steve, that line forms behind me!
I really can’t see there being a mid-series Christmas Special, unless the BBC have commissioned an additional episode they haven’t told us about. Seeing as we were told that 14 episodes had been commissioned, and one of those has already been broadcast, that leaves 13 episodes to make up the rest of Series Seven.
@TWWL Why so surprised? I have yet to meet someone who liked last years season.
@TE The Christmas specials have always been attached “production-wise” to the previous series. Then they get attached to the next series on the DVD releases. That’s so that the previous series can be released on DVD in time for Christmas gifts.
So “The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe” was the 14th episode produced for the 6th series, just as “The Christmas Invasion” was the 14th episode produced for the 1st series. “TD, TW and TW” will eventually be released on the 7th series DVD.
Whether or not there will in fact be a Christmas 2012 special, I don’t know for certain. There are 14 episodes that will be produced for series 7. So there should 15 episodes total on the next DVD release.
That’s my theory and my theory is what.
@Professor Zed
Not according to The Writer’s Tale. The production code for The Christmas Invasion was 2.X which is why it was filmed alongside Series Two. Also, the announcement that there would be 14 episodes for Series Seven said that the 2011 Christmas Special was included in those 14 episodes: /2011/06/fourteen-new-episodes-with-matt-smith-confirmed/

@Steve
Yeah, everyone hated it alright.
(P.S. Not everyone hated it)
@TE HOW DARE YOU upstage me by accessing the facts! What can I say? I got that completely backwards. Hey, at least when I’m wrong, I’m really wong!
So right. What are they gonna do about a 2012 Christmas special? Perhaps it’s time for the Doctor to take a Christmas vacation?
@Steve
While I’m sure not EVERYONE hated (there’s bound to be one or two) I’d say enough people did “HATE IT” to matter! Why else would Moffat make a point of changing his style for the following season? I don’t think he would have done so if you and I would have been alone.
@Professor Zed
Unless, of course, the Christmas Special is the mid-series finale which would be cool if it was like A Good Man Goes To War.
