Steven Moffat’s sent out a warning to fans to prepare them for the “tragedy” that awaits the Doctor, Amy and Rory when they journey to New York in the new series.

The cast and crew are currently over in America filming on location in the city for the fifth episode of Series 7, which will feature the departure of Amy and Rory. Speaking to BBC America at last month’s official Convention in Cardiff, the showrunner teased: “Oh, there will be tragedy in New York. There will be Weeping Angels there too.”

He explained that bringing the statues back for “a final encounter” with the Ponds in the Big Apple “seemed to make sense”, and added that they plan to make full use of the city’s iconic landmarks. “We’re not just going to go there and film in a back street that we could film in Cardiff,” he said. “It’s just that this is a different backdrop for the story.”

Imagine them turning the Statue of Liberty into a Weeping Angel. That would be the scariest thing ever.

I fear it may be Amy’s death that Moffat is talking about. It says there the statues are back for a final encounter so is it the last of the Weeping Angels then? I’d be more devastated if that were true.

This looks set to be an extremely sad episode… and an extremely brilliant one.

Nice idea, I’d love to see that!
Although, with so many people looking at the statue, it’s no wonder it doesn’t move very far! :D

Any and Rory don’t leave and stay in the TARDIS. Amy and the Doctor have an affair and repopulate the planet with new time lords?

u just no the statue of liberty is going to be the god of all weeping angels and come to life i will be very surprised if they dont use this landmark for that purpose of the weeping angles :)

The problem with the Statue of Liberty being a Weeping Angel is firstly the amount of people looking at it.

Secondly, its shere size means it would have difficulty in moving through New York, though granted it did walk through New York in Ghostbusters 2.

Thirdly, the fact that such a Weeping Angel could possibly send most of New York back in time to live on the lives they should have lived, which would be weird.

Fourthly, how would you defeat the Statue of Liberty?

Having said that, don’t get me wrong, the Statue of Liberty as a Weeping Angel sounds great on paper, but I’m not seeing how you’d make it work practically.

Not sure about the liberty theory. The “skin” is made out of copper and I doubt making the national symbol of American freedom into a huge monster is best way to attain American viewership. I do however believe in the River theory that the weeping angels touch Rory & Amy whilst they’re in New York. That makes them dead in our timeline but safe in another to live life out with the younger Melody. It would give us the heartbreak of Amy & Rory dead whilst letting River Song carry on in our timeline and the happily ever after ending in the alternate one.

As a sidenote, is Carol Skinner threatening the BBC or has the budget department just stolen from Fort Knox – since when did Doctor Who have the budget for location filming in the U.S & Spain? Unless the last eight episodes are shot in a shed ;)

The Melody theory is brilliant…except that Martha and the Doctor were able to come back to the present after the Weeping Angels in Blink sent them back in time. Perhaps the Angels will have some new power that makes it impossible to return…it wouldn’t be the first time that they changed for the plot. But how would it be a “final end” for Amy and Rory?
Even so, it is an excellent theory. Mels said that the last time she had regenerated, she “ended up a toddler in New York”. She didn’t say, however, that she hadn’t regenerated again in between. There is still the gap from 1969 to 1989…we don’t know where she was or who she was with or even what she looked like. I can’t wait for this episode!
