Rate & Discuss: Dinosaurs on a Spaceship
An unmanned spaceship is hurtling towards certain destruction – unless the Doctor can save it, along with its impossible cargo… of dinosaurs!
Snakes on a Plane eat your heart out – tonight the Doctor went one step further as he faced Dinosaurs on a Spaceship. But was the latest episode all it was cracked up to be?
On paper, tonight’s adventure had all the makings of a classic: an unmanned spaceship, an Egyptian queen (oh hello Queen Nefertiti!) and Mitchell and Webb guest starring as two robots. What more could a Doctor Who fan ask for? If you answered ‘dinosaurs’ to that very question, though, your excitement levels have probably gone into overdrive…
As always, the TARDIS team found themselves at the very heart of the mission, as the Doctor raced against time to save the impossible cargo. If there’s one thing you can say about this episode, it’s that it did exactly what it says on the tin – writer Chris Chibnall’s “heart leapt” when he first heard it, but did it live up to your prehistoric presumptions?
It’s time to get on the floor and do the dinosaur – rate and discuss the T-Rex tale below!
It was a silly episode, but silly in a good way. The big-name actors were great and I really liked Mitchell and Webb as the voices of the robots. And the dinosaurs were awesome. But when are dinosaurs not? :)
One unexpectedly cool thing about this episode was Amy and Rory, actually. They aren’t my favourite companions (I like them well enough, but not my favourites), but they were actually insightful and helpful and Amy was good with that computer! Props to them for defying the stereotype of clueless humans :)
The end was thought-provoking, because I think we’ve witnessed a shift in the Doctor’s attitude. He said he doesn’t give second chances way back in The Christmas Invasion, but he still usually gave an option (even to Daleks, they just didn’t like to listen). I think he’s finally done putting up with nonsense from baddies, which might actually be a refreshing change.
I am a bit confused about the timeline though because that Silurian on the computer looked suspiciously like the Silurian scientist from series 5. But it couldn’t have been, because there were no dinosaurs in 2010. So am I mistaken and that wasn’t the same Silurian? Any insights?
I loved it, and crucially, my daughters did too. My eldest is a bit hit-or-miss as far as Doctor Who goes; she is a very emotional person and gets scared very easily. She mostly doesn’t like Doctor Who. But she LOVED this one! She didn’t like Tricey dying, but was pleased that Solomon got his just reward for that. This was exactly what I really want out of Who: time for a quick adventure and then back for tea. I loved how Rory’s dad is now a world traveler. His eyes have been opened, and he’s loving it.
Mitchell and Webb were the robots? I knew they sounded familiar! Awesome. 8-)
BTW, I don’t think this the Silurian on the ship’s recording is meant to be Malokeh. It’s just a male Silurian. They used the same actor most likely for the same reason they keep having female Silurians played by Neve McIntosh — they’ve got the molds already made for the prosthetics, so it’s much simpler if they can talk the same actor into coming back. ;-)
Dinosaurs, ancient Egyptian queens, dead Silurians, a wave-powered spaceship set on a collision course with Earth, a number of pretty big-name actors, and of course Rory’s dad- this episode had them all! It was silly and funny in all the right places. I also enjoyed seeing a bit of the Doctor’s dark side when he set the missiles on Solomon; it’s good sometimes to see just how far he can be pushed. Also, just like to say, Mitchell and Webb were hilarious as the two bad-tempered bargain bin robots!
I keep waiting for someone to point out the most obvious!! So – How can a civilisation that can build an ark like that with thousands of Silurian’s and Dinosaurs could not defeat 1 person and 2 Robots???
@Steve
They were asleep, in stasis, and were awoken a few at a time and thrown off the ship.
@TWWL Ok, so the Silurains in the cave were woken by the miners. The Silurains in the hungry earth were woken by the drilling, etc….. Would they leave the ship defenceless????
Loved Nefertiti as she would be an interesting pairing for a companion for the Doctor. Now showing that the Ponds actually learned something from all their adventures is greatand the dad was actually well equipped kind of parallel to Rory himself always playing the bumbling sidekick. The rogue trader Solomon (David Bradley) who also was in Harry Potter as Argus Filch an interesting and ill equipped villain no match for the Doctor. Was a fun episode on the whole even without Mitchell and Webb who added that extra spark of fun.
