BBC Worldwide and New Zealand Mint have today unveiled a collection of new Doctor Who coins that will be launched to commemorate the series’ 50th anniversary!

In addition to the legal tender coin, authorised by the South Pacific Island nation Niue, which features the TARDIS aside the official 50th logo, a set of collectible coins, baring the 11 Doctors, will be released later in the year. Plus, more coins are planned throughout 2014 and 2015. The initial coins will launch at the World Money Fair in Berlin on 1st February.

The “must-have” coins can be ordered for worldwide shipping from New Zealand Mint.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with New Zealand Mint for this global deal,” said Racheal Hammond, BBC Worldwide’s Senior Licensing Executive. “It’s an historic year for Doctor Who – we’re pleased to be able to bring this unique product to fans and collectors alike.”

NZ Mint Chief Executive Simon Harding continued: “I grew up with Doctor Who as a child in New Zealand, which was the first country outside the UK to screen the show, so it is a huge honour to be asked to make the coins to mark the 50th anniversary of the Doctor.”

In the UK the Royal Mail will be celebrating the landmark year with collectible stamps.
