Steven Moffat has revealed that the events of The Day of the Doctor will “redefine” the iconic Time Lord forever.

The head writer teased that things are about to get “dark” and “serious” for our hero as he prepares to face the day he’s been running from all his life. “We’re about to move the Doctor into a place and you’ll see we’ve been moving him into that direction for a while,” he has told The Hollywood Reporter. “The question was, what was the most important thing that happened to the Doctor, the day he won’t forget?”

He continued “So I always knew what I wanted to accomplish. But it was a tremendous challenge to ensure the next 50 years while also celebrating the legend of Doctor Who.”

He also commented on his future with the show affirming he has “no intentions to leave”.

Hints at this monumental shift in the 50th Anniversary episode have been around for a while now, starting with Murray Gold’s comments about aspects of the episode being controversial and perhaps splitting the fanbase.

These further comments by Steven Moffat have me worried. All this talk of darkness concerns me and makes it sound like Moffat is going to turn the Doctor into the Master in all but name, or perhaps even worse.

That would change the show, but I’m certain not for the better. How could we and his past/future companions carry on liking the Doctor if we knew something bad, dark or perhaps even evil about him?

On the other hand, it may be something we can deal with as a fanbase.

The uncertainty is difficult, but we’ll know in 10 days.

Mmh, it has me worried a little bit. The less we know about the Doctor the better…

Moff could be setting up the development of the dark side of the Doctor which becomes the amalgamation which is the Valeyard. It would make sense. The nice part regenerates into Capaldi. The evil part regenerates into the Vayleyard.
