Rate & Discuss: In the Forest of the Night

October 25th, 2014

One morning in every city and town in the world, the human race wakes up to face the most surprising invasion yet. Everywhere, in every land, a forest has grown overnight and taken back the Earth. It doesn’t take the Doctor long to discover that the final days of humanity have arrived.

The latest series of Doctor Who continued tonight as the final days of humanity arrived…

In this weekend’s episode, written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, the residents of Planet Earth woke to face their most surprising invasion yet when, in every city and town, a mysterious and magical forest grew overnight. It was the start of a fairytale rooted in danger and, as always, it was down to the Doctor, with the help of some school children, to save the day.

Typically with Doctor Who, though, the invasion of the trees served as the seed of a much deeper story as, amidst the chaos, Danny Pink was reunited with his favourite Time Lord and we were shown a hint of what’s to come. Meanwhile, it transpired that the fate of the world lay in the mind of one of Clara’s pupils. Was the Tree Age over before it had begun?

So, what did you make of tonight’s mystical tale? Is it destined to become a tree-mendious classic, or was the show barking up the wrong tree? Your views would really help to spruce up the comments section below, and don’t forget to rate it too! Tiger, tiger, burning bright…

Much like other series, this felt very much like a filler before the big finale. Boom Town, Fear Her, The Logder, Closing Time, none of them are particularly spectacular and this certainly didn’t blow me away. Had the Doctor and Clara not embarked on this adventure, very little would have changed. Danny knows about The Doctor now but apart from that I really fail to see what this episode was about. There was no real plot, no real villain, it just seemed a bit pointless. Next weeks episode looks a lot like other Moffat creations such as A Good Man Goes to War, promising much but delivering very little. The fact that in the trailer we saw Jenna Coleman says ‘Clara Oswald has never existed,’ does not bode well.

Oh dear. Could this be the worst episode ever? Certainly a contender. Was like a school play. Horrific.

Yeah, it was a filler episode, but I didn’t really mind for some reason. I’m not saying it was great, but there was nothing for me to get upset about either.

It was just a very simple episode to pass the time for the main event. There were slight pointers to the Vashta Narada, the concept of the trees filling the planet is a good one but needed a better story and perhaps a reference to the ancestors of the Forest of Cheem.

I don’t know. I do see Katie and Tractator’s points about the episode, but it still didn’t bother me. It’s one of those quirky “meh” episodes, if you’ll excuse me using that hateful term.

As for Jenna Coleman saying Clara Oswald never existed, well, it’s a big revelation if true, but I need to know more before I really care.

Yawn…. what a bore to a boring series overall. Again this felt like the Clara show with Danny Pointless. The only saving grace is Peter C who definitely shows he is a great choice for the Doctor! I thought though, the whole premise was awful! If this was set on another planet, it could have made sense but based on earth made it as stupid and unbelievable as Kill The Moon! I still contend Steven Moffatt is a poor head writer and this kind of rubbish falls directly at his feet. Time to go Mr Moffatt!!!!

What I’m about to say is something I don’t want to say but I have to… This has to be without a doubt the worst episode in Doctor Who’s history. The Twin Dilemma suddenly looks like a good episode in my eyes now and that is saying a lot!

Before I begin my rant here’s a few positives; I did like the premise of the entire planet being turned into a forest. I did really enjoy the shot of London being covered in green. Mave was actually all right (unlike the other kids and trust me my rant is going to be talking a LOT of them!) and I really liked that moment with Clara and The Doctor near the end where she say’s it’s time for the human race to save you.

But the plot was weak, despite people saying it’s going to be the end of the world I just didn’t take it seriously. Dialogue was weak, the whole scene at the end where we see Maves sister should of been an emotional scene but It was stupidly done and Danny; If he appears in the next Doctor Who season I’m going to scream so loud even the Shalka will blush!

And now, the Children; I hate their guts, they are annoying rude idiotic brats and I have enough of those at my school! It might not entirely be the actor’s fault, the blame lands on the author.

This episode sucked and I’ll probably never choose to watch it again when I get the DVD box set. I am very disappointed that I had to wright such a negative comment on Doctor Who.

    Awful.

The worst Doctor Who episode, not just of this series, but possibly of the last few years.

I have loved this series, it’s sharper, well paced and reminiscent of classic who.
    But last nights… What happened?!

Thank the (Time) Lord that next week’s looks to bring it back on track from the gutter of this episode.

I have been watching DR WHO since the days of Pertwee, this series, and the previous Matt Smith era, are some of the worst stories ever written in what is slowly but surely a series in terminal decline! i blame Stephen Moffatt, he does not seem to understand or care anymore about the show, its writing has become infantile and pointless, who is it aimed at 4 year olds!!! even kids are laughing at it for all the wrong reasons…..a change of management is needed, its not the companion& boyfriend show, guest starring the DR!!! EITHER THAT OR TAKE IT DOWN THE VETS AND HAVE IT HUMANELY PUT DOWN, before it ends the career of a great actor like Capaldi!!!

I cannot agree more. Really not many points for that episode.

Placed on another planet, would have helped a lot. Earth in jeopardy was not convincing. The forest was not scary at all. Actually it was a very nice forest with the sun shining and all the light green. If they would have chosen a scary forest at least. But well, how lost could you get in the heart of London bumping into buildings every 10 meter?

And then we have those barking (!) wolves. Sure. The show should really be a bit more educational in a correct way. And I won’t even start on Solar flares and their effects.

I’m wondering how Clara can fall for Danny at all. She so much likes being on the TARDIS and seeing all those amazing things. Danny is Prince Valium compared to that. Its like Mickey and Rose. And we know how that turned out…

I liked a few small parts in this episode nevertheless. Beautiful picture when they come to that light flooded place to discover the ‘thoughts’. And I loved Peter starting to act a little bit like Matt referring to himself as a ’strangely compelling masculine figure’ and then scaring himself realising what he just said. lol

All in all – hoping for the next one. It can only get better from here (I hope).

Okay, theory time, so I think the “I hope my boyfriend wasn’t to mean to me” line from Missy and the “Clara, I’m not your boyfriend” and “I never said it was your mistake” lines from the Doctor to Clara are connected. Seriously i will be crushed if Clara doesn’t exist because if I go bakc to watch an episode, say The Time of The Doctor for example, it will be hard to listen to her say “Please don’t change” when its not really her and the only way I will be okay with it is if Missy is controlling Clara. When Clara does eventually leave the show , and we all knkw she will at some point don’t deny it, I would hope she leaves the TARDIS crew to go get married to Danny and I hope she doesn’t get killed of because then she could come back like Martha did in The Sontaran Stratagem. But because it is a Moffat one she will most likely die, and if she does I hope her last words to the Doctor are “I love you, and one thing, Run, run you clever boy and remember me” that to me is the only way they can end it and it would be really sweet and emotional, and if she dies I want her last words to Danny to be “Danny, I always put you first, I love the Doctor, but I love you in different way, in a special way, and you will always be mine”. So that was long and rant-like but I really hope it is happy end, probably won’t be , but good to have hope.

Very worrying how we’re all feeling quite negative about this episode and Series 8 as a whole, but reassuring most don’t think it’s Peter Capaldi’s fault.

Capaldi get better with every episode. He’s a great actor, but there’s only so much you can do with a lousy script.
moffat needs to take a back seat for a while and let someone else (anyone else) write the script.
Hopefully the next episode won’t be as boring as this one.

@Joshrr True but Moffatt is Head Writer – He comes up with the idea, gets someone to write it and edited the scripts!
