With filming on the next series of Doctor Who now officially underway, the BBC have released the first picture of Pearl Mackie on set!
The actress was announced as the new companion back in April when fans were given their first look at her in action as Bill. She’ll make her official debut when the show returns to our screens next year but it’s only just the beginning at the moment as she enjoyed her first day on location earlier this week. It looks like she’s having a great time already! Check out a video diary from Pearl herself below.

Filming on Series 10 commenced in Cardiff earlier this week as the TARDIS finally reopened its doors to get the ball rolling on Peter Capaldi’s third string of adventures.
It marked the beginning of a brand new era as Pearl Mackie stepped in front of the cameras to kick start her journey as the Twelfth Doctor’s brand new companion, Bill, to be greeted by a bouquet of flowers from her predecessor, Jenna Coleman, as a special good luck charm. Not that she needs it, of course! But it’s not all about new faces this year, as here’s a blast from the not so distant Christmas past…
It’s just been confirmed that Matt Lucas will be reprising his role as Nardole to accompany our honourable heroes through time and space. Introduced as a guest stint in last year’s Christmas Special, The Husbands of River Song, the actor promised his Twitter followers that his character will become “more textured” as he embarks on the trip of a lifetime.
But what other surprises will Series 10 have in store? There’s already plenty to be excited about, including the return of writers Frank Cottrell-Boyce and Sarah Dollard, but we’ll just have to wait until 2017 to find out for ourselves. Oh, what we would give to be a fly on the wall at Roath Lock Studios right about now… Where is a TARDIS when you need one, eh?!
A Doctor Who script personally signed by Peter Capaldi is currently up for auction.
The script – the second draft of Series 9’s premiere episode The Magician’s Apprentice – was donated by the Twelfth Doctor to Lively Minds‘ annual fundraiser week and comes complete with his very own drawing of Davros, which is worth the money in itself! All funds raised will go towards supporting childhood education and female empowerment in rural Ghana and Uganda. Thanks to Laura for the tip!

Matt Lucas will be returning to Doctor Who next year, it has been confirmed.
The actor – who was introduced as Nardole in last year’s Christmas Special, The Husbands of River Song – will be reprising his role as the “bumbling duffel-coated” hero in the first episode of Series 10, which begins filming next week. While the exact details regarding his comeback haven’t been revealed, the character will be taking on a more permanent role in the show as he joins Peter Capaldi in the TARDIS alongside new companion Pearl Mackie.
As expected, the Series 10 premiere is written by outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat, with Lawrence Gough in line to direct. The second episode has been penned by Frank Cottrell-Boyce (In The Forest of the Night), while Sarah Dollard (Face the Raven) and Mike Bartlett (Doctor Foster) will also be contributing scripts. Exciting times ahead!
What do you think of these latest developments? And are you excited for Nardole’s return?
Penelope Wilton has been knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, as BBC News reports.
The actress – who now becomes a Dame for her services to drama – will be best known to Doctor Who fans for her portrayal of Harriet Jones, MP for Flydale North turned Prime Minister turned Earth Defender, who appeared in Series 1, Series 2 and Series 4 (yes, you know who she is!).
Her extensive career, spanning five decades, also includes roles in Downton Abbey, Calendar Girls and The BFG.

Peter Capaldi dropped an intriguing teaser during a Doctor Who panel at Awesome Con earlier this week.
Discussing Clara Oswald’s exit at the end of Series 9, the Twelfth Doctor actor inadvertently revealed that he has just filmed a scene in which his former companion is still present, prompting inevitable speculation that Jenna Coleman will be back in Series 10.
However, filming on the next series hasn’t even started yet, which suggests that Peter was actually referring to Class.
The new Doctor Who spin off is currently being filmed with persistent rumours that the Doctor himself will be making a cameo. Set at Coal Hill School, where Clara was a teacher, a reference to the impossible girl would be fitting, however we’ll just have to wait and see what comes of Peter’s cryptic comments as it’s not due to hit our screens until the autumn.
Please join us as we raise our glasses to wish Colin Baker a very happy birthday!
The actor – who helmed the TARDIS as the Sixth Doctor from 1984 to 1986 – turns 73 today, and we hope he enjoys his celebrations.
His adventures continue in the Big Finish audio adventures, and next year the past and present will collide when he comes face to face with River Song herself! Feel free to post your own birthday wishes for Colin in the comments.
