According to The Express today, Matt Smith has agreed to play the Doctor for at least another three years - helming the series right up to its 50th anniversary in 2013!

The newspaper suggests that ‘moves are afoot’ at the BBC to sign the actor long-term, with their ‘mole’ explaining: “The current team believe that Matt is the person to continue taking the show forward over the next few years and want to avoid the prospect of fans having to get used to yet another actor in the role in the near future.”

Meanwhile, they quote an official Doctor Who spokeswoman as saying: “From Matt’s point of view he’s loving playing the part and has no plans to quit. We aren’t in a position to provide a comment as to whether he’ll be playing the part in 2013.”

Earlier this year, tabloid rumours suggested Smith would be stepping down from the role at the end of Series 6, after two series, but what do you think about today’s news?

Would you be happy to stick with the Eleventh Doctor until 2013? Let us know below!

The Doctor will be back on our screens in December for a Christmas special, but first we’ll see him in Series 4 of The Sarah Jane Adventures, in Death of the Doctor.

Matt’s definitely still going to be the Doctor for Series Seven (2012), with the option of remaining until Series Nine (2014/2015, depending on whether or not there will be another gap year).

I think it’s great that MS will be playing the Doctor for the next few series at least. Imo he’ll be able to really get into playing the Doctor and go down in Doctor Who history as a great Doctor like DT was.

To be honest, it’s a pretty safe bet to say that Matt has already gone down as one of the greatest Doctors of all time, which is pretty incredible after just one series.

All I can say is they’d better keep him in for a while. The Doctor is running out of regenerations and I can’t help but feel nervous. Eleven has plenty of potential and hopefully MS won’t just drop him off without fully realizing it.

they will get around that, the bcc will not let doctor who die just coz the doctor has run out og regenrations.

i thinks its great, as it takes a series for you’re brain to stop yelling (or it could just be me…) “get out of the TARDIS you imposter” and for it to accept him as the doctor, and to stop comparing him to the previous doctor…

I really hope this news is true and the Sun is not.

I will be very pleased to see smith in the Tardis for Three years at least.

I really like him as the doctor and i will be looking foward to be seeing him in the Sarah Jane Smith Adventures and the Christmas Special this year.

Personally I am not happy that Matt is staying until 2013! What would make me happy is if he stayed even longer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Matt is my favourite Doctor and I don’t want another one for a long time! Please stay at least that long Matt!!! Please!

I’m not concerned about “running out of regenerations”. Everyone from Davies to Tennant to Moffat have already been indicating this limit will just be ignored, or a line of dialogue added somewhere indicating the limit no longer applies. As long as the show remains successful, we could eventually see the 20th Doctor.

As for Matt Smith, I think it makes sense for him to stay till at least 2013 for the anniversary. It might give us an indication of what the inevitable 50th Anniversary special will be about, perhaps! But 3 full seasons seems to be the most frequent tenure for Doctors (more or less – thinking Troughton, Davison, McCoy and Tennant since the specials were considered an extension of Season 4). So if Smith stays to 2011 that’ll give him 4 seasons placing him in striking distance of tying Pertwee.
