Series 7 went out with an almighty bang at the weekend as the Doctor’s greatest secret was revealed.
In Matt Smith’s words the final was “just the start” of this year’s epicness as next on the Whovian agenda is the highly anticipated 50th anniversary special, which will hit TV and cinema screens in 3D on Saturday 23rd November.
One month later we’ll be treated to the traditional Christmas Special, which will be filmed “over the summer”.
And after that it’ll be full steam ahead to Series 8 in 2014, which has now been officially confirmed. With both Matt and Jenna-Louise Coleman returning, and Brian Minchin on board as the new executive producer alongside Steven Moffat, the future looks bright for the Doctor and it’s an exciting time to be a Whovian as the series turns 50 years old.

As our sights turn to the 50th anniversary special, the BBC’s released a new interview with two of its stars!
The “momentous” episode will air (in 3D no less!) on 23rd November and will feature the return of David Tennant(!). This new video, which was released as a thank you to the fans who kept the events of the Series 7 finale secret, takes us behind the scenes of the anniversary episode as Matt and David discuss the historic meeting of the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors – and they “seem to get on quite well”!
“They do bicker quite a bit,” David teases. “But they enjoy each other’s very presence…”
Billie Piper will too be back as Rose Tyler in the special which will be shown in cinemas.

Steven Moffat has urged fans to take all of the rumours and speculation regarding the 50th anniversary with a pinch of salt as he confirms we’ll “just have to wait”.
The exec producer has penned the “momentous” episode, to be shown on BBC One and in cinemas in 3D to celebrate the show’s historic landmark in November. Speaking to Red Carpet News TV at the BAFTA TV Awards – where a tribute to Doctor Who was screened – he revealed that he’s “rather reticent” to confirm or deny the ongoing rumbles.
“All I’ve ever revealed about what we’re doing is anything that we’ve filmed outside,” he said referring to the announcement that David Tennant and Billie Piper will be returning for the special. “People are making up stuff about who is or isn’t in the special and most are quite fanciful. I love you all Doctor Who fans but don’t believe everything you hear.”
Forget about may the fourth, May’s all about the Fifth Doctor as our countdown to the 50th anniversary continues!
Tom Baker transformed into Peter Davison (not really, but you know what we mean) in Logopolis in March 1981 but it wasn’t until the following January that his adventures really began. In Castrovalva we met the fresh-faced Doctor in all his cricketing, celery wearing glory. It was business as usual as he tried to avoid destruction within Event One and it was the beginning of a shining new era for the series.
After a particularly problematic regeneration, over his tenure the Fifth Doctor appeared to have a new vulnerable side not present in his predecessors. While the Doctors before him were authoritative in the face of impending doom, this Doctor was more reserved as he often left it to fate to determine the outcome with the flip of a coin. You can’t blame him for his sensitive side – he met some hostile foes such as the Master and the Daleks!
Although Peter’s time in the TARDIS was relatively short Doctor Who has remained a big part of his career, as well as his personal life – his real life daughter Georgia Moffett was The Doctor’s Daughter back in 2008. In 2012, she married Tenth Doctor actor David Tennant too! Talk about keeping it in the family, and we wouldn’t want it any other way…
The 50th anniversary of Doctor Who will be commemorated at the Vivid Sydney festival, it has been announced.
For one night only, on 1st June, a series of 3D illuminations of the Eleventh Doctor and his foes will be displayed on the side of Customs House at Circular Quay. The projections will be accompanied by a medley of Murray Gold’s music from the series, including I am the Doctor.
Vivid Sydney is an annual event celebrating light and music.
Each year the city’s transformed into a spectacular canvas and Doctor Who will be at the heart of the celebrations in 2013 as the popular series officially turns half a century old.
“The collaboration sees Australian creative innovators The Spinifex Group working with the Doctor Who team to create projections that will deliver a unique birthday celebration for the show’s fans,” said NSW Deputy Minister for Trade & Investment, Andrew Stoner.

Billie Piper has revealed that stepping back into the shoes of Rose Tyler has felt “like going home”.
The actress will reprise her popular role for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary in November and told Red Carpet News TV that “it’s such a special one”.
“This show is a real gift to me,” she said. “Because it is the 50 year celebration it is all very much for the fans, and you can really feel that on this particular episode.”
David Tennant is also back for the episode, which will be shown on TV and in cinemas.
A special Doctor Who tribute will be shown at this weekend’s BAFTA TV Awards to commemorate its 50th anniversary.
The celebratory video montage celebrating its long history is to be aired at the event, which will be held in London, at the Royal Festival Hall, on Sunday (12th May). As well as that, a pair of Daleks will be patrolling the red carpet to keep the arriving guests in check, while Jenna-Louise Coleman, who’s currently starring in the series as companion Clara, will also be presenting one of the evening’s awards.
Chief Executive of BAFTA, Amanda Berry OBE, commented: “There are only a handful of programmes that have Doctor Who’s ability to put the nation on their sofas, or behind them, year after year. BAFTA raises a toast to the series on its 50th birthday this year.”
“This is a massive and exciting year for Doctor Who so I’m thrilled BAFTA are including a special tribute to the show,” Steven Moffat added. “So thrilled, in fact, we’re sending the Doctor’s best friend, Jenna Coleman, to present an award. We’re also sending his worst enemy, the Daleks, to exterminate lots of innocent people. Sorry, it’s just what they do.”
Don’t miss the BAFTA TV Awards as they are shown on BBC One this Sunday from 8pm!
Christmas has come early for fans down under as a Doctor Who pop-up shop has opened its doors in Australia today!
Billed as a “fan’s paradise”, the new shop will be at 7 Wilson Street, Newtown, Sydney for a short time only. It is the first of its kind to include its array of Doctor Who merchandise, such as mugs, DVDs plus other exclusive products.
Fans had been invited to come dressed up as their favourite characters and monsters to celebrate its launch.
“Doctor Who’s always cultivated an extremely diverse, loyal and passionate fan base,” said Rachael Hammond, BBC Worldwide’s Senior Licensing Executive. “We are delighted to be able to offer a dedicated space for fans of the world’s longest running sci-fi show to interact with each other and take home their own part of Doctor Who in its 50th year.”
In store fans can also have their picture taken with a full size Dalek and replica TARDIS.

While the episode is being kept “under lock and key” we do know that David Tennant and Billie Piper will be returning as the Tenth Doctor and Rose during the “momentous” festivities. In the last month, filming has taken place at iconic landmarks the Tower of London and Trafalgar Square, plus the shape-shifting Zygons are back. As Doctor Who builds towards its 50th birthday (199 days to go!) tensions will soon start hotting up for the Doctor as Matt Smith says “the finale is just the start” of the drama ahead.
The latest series will reach its “epic and huge” conclusion in The Name of the Doctor when the Doctor’s “greatest secret” will (apparently) be revealed. After that we’ll face a six month wait to prepare for the “momentous” landmark adventure which will mark the return of David Tennant and Billie Piper as the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler.
So it’s going to be a long summer but Matt has suggested the finale will give us plenty to think about… “This is going to be he biggest year in the history of the show,” he teased. “The final shows a pivotal moment in the Doctor’s life so it’s a complete game changer.”
Series 7’s penultimate episode Nightmare in Silver airs Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
