It only feels like yesterday that Peter Capaldi was being announced as the Twelfth Doctor, but time really does fly when you’re having fun as it’s already four years later and the end of his epic era is nigh.

Exactly when he’ll be handing over his TARDIS duties, though, we’re not entirely sure. It was assumed that the regeneration scene would feature in this year’s Christmas Special, which has been confirmed as both Peter and outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat’s final episode, however a spanner has recently been thrown into the works…

That spanner being this Series 10 trailer, which shocked us all with a blink and you’ll miss it clip of the Doctor’s death-defying process seemingly beginning. That combined with the fact that Peter recently revealed that he’s already filmed his character’s final moments, despite the fact the festive episode doesn’t film until July. It’s confusing to say the least!

But then again, when isn’t it? Nobody really knows what’s going on, but here is the place where you can post your theories. We’re sure we’ll slowly learn more as Series 10 continues, so be sure to check back in to dissect the latest developments. We’ll put a link in the sidebar for easy access, so you’ll never be too far away if you need to simultaneously speculate and self-combust in equal measure.

    They’ve spoiled what could’ve been a great suprise by showing it in the trailer. As soon we see the soldiers or that room, it’ll be obvious what’s coming.

    My bet is on a regeneration in Extremis, with a temporary bit of stunt casting to wind people up before Capaldi reappears for the rest of the series.

    I am also confused by the trailer. Peter Capaldi has said he has filmed the regeneration and it clearly shows the doctor regenerating in the trailer after The Pilot episode. Then I read in Doctor Who magazine that they haven’t filmed the Christmas episode yet but I have read that a certain someone is going to be in the Christmas episode to help with the regeneration. I think Peter Capaldi is regenerating at the end of this series and it is being kept quiet so that it comes as a surprise when we see the new Doctor. Chris Chibnal will be writing the Christmas episode I think.

    @Andrew Glasson
    No, Moffat will be writing the Christmas special (until Chibnall writes the regeneration reaction from the new Doctor), Capaldi will be the Doctor (until the end regen), and Rachel Talalay will be director. She’s said it’s her last time working with Moffat and Capaldi, so I guess she knows who’s doing that episode.

    When you say end of an epic era, I guess that could mean epically bad. I am sorry if I step on any toes here but I have been a loyal DW fan since watching new Peter Davidson episodes and reruns of Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker as a child. I have nothing against Peter Capaldi as the Doctor and I feel he does a great job portraying him but I feel much of the story writing for the last 2 seasons has been subpar at best. Some of the episodes have been better or worse than others but I just feel like the momentum and feel gained from the last 3 Doctors has been lost once Matt Smith left and we are heading in the wrong direction. I for one am looking forward to some fresh blood in the producer’s chair and the direction the show will take. Just my take, does anyone else feel the same?

    Dr Who is an epic. with a solar hero.
    In myth the solar hero moves through the 12 signs of the zodiac before sinking in the west to the underworld.Hero and sun are synonymous.
    Im hoping they follow that formula true to type,however much they modify it to suit a modern diverse audience.

    They can begin another cycle but the 13th doctor then also becomes the first doctor of another cycle…maybe thats why they have the 12th and 1st doctor together at Christmas.

    Can I just add here that I wish Moffat and Gatiss all the very best with Dracula and hope they film some scenes at Whitby where Dracula lands.I hope they bring out the psychology/mythology of the story because Bram Stoker, who wrote it, was steeped in the old storytelling myths that his mother told him as a child.This aspect of the book has rarely translated to screen so Im hoping for some redress there!
