Today sees the launch of a brand new discussions feature on the site, quite simply known as Remember when….

Every Monday we will be putting our nostalgia caps on as we take a trip down memory lane to a time gone by – a time, specifically, relating to the Doctor (well, this is a Doctor Who fansite after all…).

In a nutshell, each week we will pick an event from the Doctor’s past, inviting you to share your memories about it.

It could be something from the revived series, the classic series, or maybe from one of his audio/novel adventures, so make sure you join us every Monday as we step into the TARDIS to commemorate – and celebrate – the fruitful history of our beloved Time Lord!

To launch the new feature today we are looking back at the launch of the revived series. Back in 2005 (on Saturday 26th March, to be precise!), the Doctor made his triumphant and, let’s face it, long overdue return to our screens. Then in his ninth incarnation, the responsibility of bringing the last of the Time Lords back to British television was down to Christopher Eccleston. He saved Rose’s life one fateful night and… queue lots of running!

Above – The Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler are ready for action.

Do you remember Rose’s premiere? Were you there to watch it live and experience Graham Norton’s impromptu guest appearance as a result of a technical issue? If you’re not in the UK, when did the episode air for you? Discuss your experiences of the show’s return – the build up, the anticipation, the expectations – in the comments! Off you go…

Doctor Who didn’t come to Norway until September the same year, and that was when I watched it. I was 14 years old at the time. I had never heard of Doctor Who before, so I had no expectations, but I still watched the 12 episodes that NRK aired. Sadly, Doctor Who did not return to Norway after that, because so few people watched it…. I was the only one in my family who watched Doctor Who back then – my parents aren’t interested in sci-fi and my sister though it was too scary. :)

I watched it go out live, very excited to have it back as I had been a fan growing up, even though it was off the air. I remember being really annoyed at Norton popping up!

I didn’t get into Doctor Who straight away.

By the time I was old enough to watch Doctor Who, it had already been cancelled. It was never repeated on TV as far as I remember and although I vaguely knew of terms such as Dalek, Doctor, Tardis and the theme tune, otherwise I wasn’t interested.

So I didn’t watch it when it came back in 2005 either. I considered it to be another BBC reboot with that guy from Gone In 60 Seconds.

I’m not sure if it was Eccleston’s last episode, or Tennant’s first episode, that first got me interested in Doctor Who.

All I remember is watching Eccleston regenerate into Tennant and thinking that it was really cool. After seeing that, I watched Tennant’s first series and really enjoyed it and that was me hooked. I went back and watched the repeats of Eccleston’s era and thought it was equally good, ending up today owning all of Tennant’s era including Specials, as well as Series 1 (which I got for the price of £10, amazingly).

    Ah, Series One.

Even though this was my first experience with Who, starting with ‘Rose’, I wouldn’t say this was the series that got me into the show, because I skipped three episodes (2,4,7) for various reasons, whereas now I wouldn’t miss a single one. It was the Classic Who stories with Tom Baker I watched between Series One and Two that got me into the show. So I would say Series One got be interested in who.

I watched the first series back not long ago and I don’t know if it holds up or not. There’s some great stuff there, such as ‘Dalek’, and some not so great stuff, such as ‘Aliens of London/world War Three’. You can certainly tell RTD and co weren’t sure how much of a success the show would be at this point, given how the overall feel of the show somehow changes quite a bit in Series Two.

Watching it though I sadly find it a bit difficult to watch Chris Ecclestone at times. Watching him you can see how he’s a very serious actor, so there isn’t that same sense of fun that you get with Tennant and Smith. I also can’t help but think of all the reasons he’s given for why he didn’t do a second series and it’s hurt my enjoyment of his Doctor over when I first watched him.

Like many long-running shows, the first batch is always a bit iffy, but overall Series One is very good, although I probably enjoyed more back in 2005 than I do now.

I remember wanting to watch Doctor Who when it premired on sci fi here in america. I loved it but i never really started like the ninth doctor until he started caring more about humans like in the doctor dances. I liked Rose Tyler from the beginning when the doctor grabbed her hand and told her to run. After that first episode m life changed. I was sad to see such a fantastic doctor go so early but he was replaced with a face i already knew from harry potter. the tenth doctor and Rose stole the show but the ninth doctor and Rose set the stage.

Like JC I didn’t get into Doctor Who straight away. When I first watched series 1 I didn’t seem to enjoy it then watched series 2 and quite enjoyed that episode but now watching series 1 more and more I think it was definitely better than series 2. Chris played a FANTASTIC Doctor and I know he’s said countless times he has no intention on returning but people can change their minds and I hope Chris does.

Haha I actually thought Norton was intended to be in the mix, I thought Rose had stumbled upon a party of people watching TV in the basement! And up he popped again to ruin Matt Smith’s first series five years later! haha

I actually enjoy this series far more now than I did back then. As a long term fan I was so concerned that they weren’t getting it right and that it wasn’t a proper continuation of the show. And I wasn’t sure I liked the re-imagining of the Doctor as a leather jacketed Northerner. But looking at it now I think it’s classic stuff and Ecclestone a really unique interpretation of the Doctor, when compared to the ones before and since. I’ve always been unsure how well the farting aliens and Big Brother/Weakest Link stuff will hold up over time, possibly dates the show a bit, but classic Who all the same I think.

I had never heard of Doctor Who until 2005 and I was around 10/11 years old. I was addicted from the first episode right up until David Tennant which was when things got really bad and I became a obsessive fangirl! :’) Sadly for me, my Doctor Who adventure finished on the 01/01/2010 when David Tennant regenerated but it was an epic five years!

I was a bit underwhelmed I think, at least outwardly

Inside I was buzzing actually , although I didn’t really expect a lot – and it took me a while to “get it” , and take to Chris Eccleston – never really took to Rose’s character

I really got into the show (new Who) by end of Chris’ reign , and then he left……….. he’s my fave Doctor still

I was raised on re-runs of Doctor Who. I remember having nightmares as a tot being chased through the school by Daleks and living plastic. And then 2005 was a glorious year, Doctor Who came back to me!
I made a friend in the UK buy the DVDs for me and ship them. Had to convert them on my computer so I could watch them, but it was worth it, I couldn’t get the channel in Canada.
