50th Celery-brations: May the FIFTH be with you!
Forget about may the fourth, May’s all about the Fifth Doctor as our countdown to the 50th anniversary continues!
Tom Baker transformed into Peter Davison (not really, but you know what we mean) in Logopolis in March 1981 but it wasn’t until the following January that his adventures really began. In Castrovalva we met the fresh-faced Doctor in all his cricketing, celery wearing glory. It was business as usual as he tried to avoid destruction within Event One and it was the beginning of a shining new era for the series.
After a particularly problematic regeneration, over his tenure the Fifth Doctor appeared to have a new vulnerable side not present in his predecessors. While the Doctors before him were authoritative in the face of impending doom, this Doctor was more reserved as he often left it to fate to determine the outcome with the flip of a coin. You can’t blame him for his sensitive side – he met some hostile foes such as the Master and the Daleks!
Although Peter’s time in the TARDIS was relatively short Doctor Who has remained a big part of his career, as well as his personal life – his real life daughter Georgia Moffett was The Doctor’s Daughter back in 2008. In 2012, she married Tenth Doctor actor David Tennant too! Talk about keeping it in the family, and we wouldn’t want it any other way…

And Doctor Who suddenly got very boring, and then very silly and then very cancelled.
@Freddy Jones Peter Davison’s last season was incredible. A damn sight more enjoyable than the rubbish put through over the last 4 years!
@Steve
Nnno. No. Nono. No. Doctor Who started to sink just before Logopolis (I’m blaming writers, not actors by the way – Davison was great as the Doctor). It picked up a little bit somewhere around Happiness Patrol but it was impossible to rescue by that point and just nosedived into cancellation. It’s had a shaky start since 2005 but it’s finally dragged itself out of Davies’ soap-opera thingy and returned to being a full-fledged science-fiction series that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Of course, every season has had its “misses” (Love and Monsters, Aliens of London, Daleks Take Manhattan, Closing Time…) but I’d say it’s been on good standing since 2005 and standing strong.
@Freddy Jones Seriously?? “returned to being a full-fledged science-fiction series that doesn’t take itself too seriously” – It couldn’t attempt to be more serious! Steven Mofat over-reliance on complicated dull plots and ripping of other peoples work has driven Doctor Who into the Ground!!!! Btw, if you want proof off how much Steven M rips off other shows, just how much alike does the Whisper men look like the Trickster from SJA? (The Wedding Of SJS)
Compare the on the night viewing figures for Peter Davison last season against the Current Season
Nightmare In Silver. – 4.7m
Frontios 6.8M (The lowest of PD last season)
Doctor’s biggest problem in the 1980’s was the producer and is currently reflected in the current Head Writer and Executive Producer.
@Steve
I’m a fan of the Trickster and he looks nothing like the Whisper men, the only thing they have in common are no eyes and creepiness!
Anyway,keeping in topic, The fifth Doctor era is probally where it started going wrong for the Timelord, but it still had some great times and the 5th Doctor was brilliant.
I met Peter Davison a few weeks ago and he is the nicest man! We told him oir daughter’s name is Amelia Rose and he laughed and said to of the greatest companions! It was nice meeting him. He is one of my favorites!
