Twelfth Doctor to be announced LIVE on Sunday!
After weeks of speculation, the BBC has revealed that they are ready to reveal the Twelfth Doctor. Well, almost!
The identity of the actor or actress who will become the next incarnation of the iconic Time Lord will be unveiled in front of a studio audience and broadcast live to the nation on BBC One this Sunday – that’s 4th August – at 7pm.
The one off show will be fronted by Zoe Ball who’ll be joined by cast members and celebrity fans for the announcement.
During the special, the Twelfth Doctor will be interviewed for the first time as fans react to his/her casting in the coveted role, which has been a hot topic among Whovians since Matt Smith confirmed his departure in June. The Eleventh Doctor star will be on hand to meet his successor in the progamme as he reflects on his own memories of the TARDIS.
“‘The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who is taking over the TARDIS,” Steven Moffat teased fans. “For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve…”
We were recently told the search had only just begun with an announcement expected in “early autumn”. But we’re now days from discovering “the biggest secret in showbiz”.
Controller of BBC Drama Ben Stephenson said: “Among all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work. We’ve been using the codename Houdini as a decoy – even those working with the next Doctor at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation! We can’t wait to unveil them live on BBC1.”

That’s Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor – Sunday 4th August, 7pm, BBC One!
Actors in the running include Rory Kinnear, David Harewood and Julian Rhind-Tutt.
Who’s your perfect 12th Doctor? Let us know in our new dedicated discussion!
There’s going to be a regeneration of the Doctor, one of the biggest in events in the show, in the 50th Anniversary year of the show, so I’m glad they’re going to make it a bit of an event.
I think there are two types of fans. Those that want to know as soon as possible, like me, and those that would rather find out when his face actually changes.
Speaking personally, I don’t particularly like massive surprises and I need time to get used to the idea of the new actor being the 12th Doctor before it actually happens.
I suppose the other type of fans would have had that too though, seeing as the regeneration will happen on Christmas Day and the first time we see the new Doctor properly will be many, many months later.
I’m looking forward to Sunday, I didn’t think it would be this soon, I just hope so much that they’ve made the right decision. Not sure what I’ll do if I hate the actor they’ve chosen.
A good idea as with Matt Smiths reveal when taking over from David Tennant it gives you a real chance to take in who they have chosen & normally by the time of the actual regeneration you can see why the person selected has ticked all of the boxes .Just an aside comment & related to this DR being number12 As we all know the fiftieth show is being advised of being a game changer .What bigger change than actually revealing that Dr number nine is actually number 1 after being given a whole new regeneration cycle therefore Matts DR is actually number 3 & not 11 as originally indicated
Wow. I’m surprised they found one so soon!
I hope Steven Moffat has the same believe in this one as he did with Matt.
I’m glad they decided to do this format again.
As I said previously, I don’t want to come home one day and find out all of a sudden, I want the suspense I got when Matt Smith was revealed. I want the same emotions I got.
So we fans have only got 3 days to find out who the 12th doctor is! I can’t wait! A new point for Doctor Who is happening once more!
Welcome back, Paul McGann!
No really. He looks great up there at the top of the page.
As for all the hype? Terrific! Can’t wait to read who it’s going to be. Unless BBC America is going to run the show too. Haven’t heard anything about that though.
@Profzed
Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor is going to be simulcast on BBC1 in the UK and on BBC America in America, so that everyone finds out at the same time.
@JC
Yes, I’ve now seen that BBC America is airing it too. Fantastic! Thanks for the info, JC.
I am not sure this is a good idea in the 50th year. Obviously a good idea at any other time but will it detract from the 50 special or are the BBC worried that the 50th special will be dreadful that they want something to fall back on!
I have to admit, as the time approaches, I’m getting more and more anxious. I’m just really worried they’re going to make the wrong choice and I’ll be forced to watch the show with a Doctor that I hate.
I’m trying to look forward to it because it is important, it’s just difficult to relax.
