Discussion: Unravelling the Mystery of Missy
The start of a new series of Doctor Who means the start of a new story arc and Steven Moffat wasted no time bringing this year’s mystery to the forefront of Whovian conversation.
At the end of Saturday’s Series 8 premiere Deep Breath we were introduced to Michelle Gomez as ‘Missy’, who we know from a previous BBC announcement is “the Gatekeeper of the Nethersphere”… whatever that means!
Not much is known about the enigmatic character, or perhaps more importantly, her relationship with the Doctor, thus far, but we thought we’d open this discussion for you to share any initial thoughts and theories.
The comments below will remain open throughout the course of the series so don’t forget to keep checking back to discuss the latest developments. Please note that the comments won’t be monitored for spoilers and also please only discuss broadcast episodes.

After thinking about this for a while, I am convinced that she is possibly the woman from the shop that gave Clara the “help line phone number and put the ad in the paper. I think that she is trying to keep the Doctor and Clara together.
I’m noticing that people who have died after helping The Doctor have ended up in paradise/heaven and in the presence of Missy, So I like the theory that she might be a version of Clara on a different timeline,The heart of the Tardis in human form or even The Master in female form but as of yet I not sure what her motives are.
I love the comments about Missy being a version of Clara–although I have not yet formed a complete theory, I would be interested in seeing how Moffat and the other writers would wrap up this timey-wimey package. I would like to see Missy be a female version of The Master or another Time Lord (or another reincarnate of my girl River, though I highly doubt this scenario!). One thing is for sure, I cannot wait to see how the mystery of Missy continues to unfold!
I don’t usually indulge in theories about Doctor Who, basically because I hate being wrong, but I thought of something this morning that I thought I’d add. Perhaps someone has already said this.
Could Missy be the Mother Superious of the Papal Mainframe?
I may be completely off track, but what made me think of the Mother Superious is the way Missy talks about the Doctor connected with what the 11th Doctor said in Time Of The Doctor:
DOCTOR: The Church of the Papal Mainframe, security hub of the known universe.
CLARA: A security church?
DOCTOR: Yep. Keeping you safe in this world and the next. I venerate the exaltation of the Mother Superious
“In this world and the next” sounded appropriate to Missy, since she’s there when these characters die.
As I say, I may be completely wrong, but it’s a thought.
Another story arch…I don’t know whether to be excited or afraid! My theory, well, I don’t really have one! But, I did notice after watching The Girl Who Waited last night that the promise land looks exactly like one part of the garden in Appalapachia. Who knows, maybe she is a hand bot in disguise or something else like that.

She’s Kochanski after running away from Lister.
Wait.
So, why is she dressed like Mary Poppins? She must be a Time Lord.
@Jess
I get the impression that, for all of her apparent ‘kindnesses’, that Missy is an out and out villain. Because of which I did wonder if she were the Master returned in female guise.
Alternatively, I thought it might a return of the Rani from the classic series who is reminiscent in looks to Missy.
@Simon
I only now saw your comment after I’d written mine where I thought it might be the Rani. I do see a strong connection between the two women.
@Freddy Jones
Oh another Dwarf fan! I like this reply, gave me a laugh.
Dear Missy,
WHO ARE YOU!!!!!!!!!
~Clara McDougle
I am convinced that she’s the mysterious woman who have clara the doctor’s phone number, but i don’ think her intentions are good, brauser she acted like she owns the doctor- in the first episode of the eight series she said that she likes doctor’s scottish accent and she might even keep it.
I think missy is some arch enemy of River, or the doctor. She might be just an old foe in a new form, using dead as weapons?
You guys… It’s obvious, they have revealed who she is in every episode, we were just too stupid to notice! Missy is someone from the afterlife who shows up in an episode every once in a while! DUHHHHH!!!! Lol
There are theories that she is miss Evangelista from silence in the library/forest of the dead. Hence Miss-e (Missy) There may be a point where the doctor dies and he finally meets Missy. Who knows (Pun intended)
My sister and I have been thinking a lot on this and have come up with a few theories,
1. Tasha (The Mother Superious of the paper mainframe.)
Because they look slightly similar if you look really hard.
2.A past Regeneration of Melody Pond, (Before she gave up her regenerations of course.)
3. A regeneration of the master.
A female ‘Master’ is a ‘Mistress.’ Mistress-Missy
I can’t wait to find out though!

The Doctors face will be very crucial to finding the truth. At the start of the series he said,”why this face, it’s like I’m trying to tell myself something!”. Didn’t Tennent’s Doctor save Capaldi’s character in the Pompeii episode and maybe that stopped this character going to this Nethersphere place. We’ll know soon enough!!
I believe she might be a form of the master in order to get feedback about how whovians react to a female main time lord to try to get a female doctor
