Trapped in a world unlike any other he has seen, the Doctor faces the greatest challenge of his many lives. One final test. And he must face it alone. Pursued by the fearsome creature known only as the Veil, he must attempt the impossible. If he makes it through, Gallifrey is waiting…
If you’re like us, you’ll still be struggling to accept last week’s tragic events of Face the Raven, but fortunately tonight’s episode was a much more laid back affair, a subtle yet enjoyable escapade to ease us gently back into the wonders of time and space. Yeah, right!
Cut to 9pm and the entire Whovian fandom is spontaneously self-combusting. It’s hard to believe that the Series 9 finale is already here but it all kicked off in Heaven Sent as the Doctor faced the greatest challenge of his many lives. To add salt to the wound, he had to face this final, formidable test all by himself, but it wasn’t as if he was being pursued by a fearsome creature intent on scaring him to death or anything. That would just be too cruel.
Basically, you’re either bowing down to your Steven Moffat cardboard cut out or cursing his very existence right now. The first part of this year’s climactic conclusion was full of its fair share of shocks and surprises which all culminated in that almighty cliffhanger (seriously, it’s had Steven in a “state of panic” for months!) to bring us kicking and screaming into next week’s grand finale, aptly titled Hell Bent. First things first, though (we know, that’s a rare treat in Doctor Who), what did you think of Heaven Sent and all the twists and turns that came with it? I am shocked and upset for what Moffatt passed off as Doctor Who tonight! I have never in over 40 years seen such a terrible episode. No story, no substance, poor direction and for god’s sake, will Moffatt ever get over his obsessions! I hate Moffatt and now I hate Doctor Who!!
It is so sad to watch something I have loved be totally and utterly destroyed!!
That was an outstanding episode. Capaldi was fantastic throughout the episode one of moffats best episodes and gallifrey OH MY GOD
Great Episode! Capaldi was awesome!
@Steve moffat brought gallifrey back is that not a story? if you hate it that much as often as you say you do why continue watching it? you’re just torturing yourself ………you’re definitely in the minority thats for certain
Hmm, I need some time to absorb and think about this episode, but first impressions weren’t bad.
@Patrick Nothing wrong with bringing back Gallirey but really?
It’s very true this is typical Moffatt, plagiarism on a massive scale – Cube, Thirteen Ghosts, elements of Saw. It was just dreadful. The Doctor going over and over the same thing for billions of years just to punch a hole in a wall? Seriously?? Moffatt needs to go!! NOW!!!
I thought this was one of the best episodes ever.
If you did not your welcome the X Factor on the other side.
The comment from Katherine is why I have not bothered giving any comments on here for a while as if you have the cheek to say you did not enjoy, what to me was a waste of my time and my money then you should not watch any more.
I remember when you could say what you through on here and people accepted it and a discussion was had about the episode good and bad bits, not told to watch another channel.
We keep watching the show weather we like what he is doing to it as it is doctor who some thing we love and enjoyed and hope and wish it will be as good as we remember it in the old days and not an off shot of Sherlock.
Let’s see: a big threat, checked. A mystery, checked. The Doctor making up the answer from little tidbits, checked. A lot of neat stuff for long and longer fans, checked. Clara, you girl…! And some answers are still left open. For me, all ingredients of a good Doctor Who episode are here, in Heaven Sent.
@dorian Nicely said. :)
@Mario
My thoughts exactly!
I wasn’t happy with the quality of the story in regards to Clara’s departure, so I was cautious about Episode 11 as we approach the end of the series. I want to start by saying that I found the Doctor-focused episode quite refreshing, as it gave me an opportunity to really spend some time with the 12th Doctor without any distractions and no one else taking up the spotlight.
‘Heaven Sent’ gave us an insight into how quickly the 12th Doctor thinks, giving him enough time to almost conference with himself to work out a solution, with the questions he should be asking himself appearing on the blackboard.
The episode itself was quite immersive and kept me interested up until around 10 minutes before the end, when the pace went into overdrive with the revelation that the Doctor was caught in an almost infinite loop. It was like the story had been strolling along and then had hit an icy patch that sent it sliding towards the end.
I think I’ll have to watch it again to understand why the skulls, the teleport room and the harder-than-diamond wall were constant or were allowed to change whilst the rest of the rooms returned to exactly the same configuration.
As for the Doctor’s return to Gallifrey and his pledge to conquer it and the Time Lords for what they’ve done, it felt out of character for the Doctor I know and I think what he does next will demonstrate whether his behaviour risks the title ‘The Doctor’ more than The War Doctor did.
@JC
I think I have a theory on why specific things did not reset. As long as the previous version of himself was connected to the machine, anything directly related to that version would remain while everything else would reset. That is why the cloths were still by the fire, BIRD was still in the sand, and the bloody footprints were still there until he disconnected the wires from the skull. At that point, the bloody footprints disappeared and so did BIRD.
@Sean
Good points Sean.
I thought it was a wonderful episode. Peter Capaldi’s acting was incredible, Punching through a diamond wall. It might have taken him a few billion years, but boy, is the twelfth Doctor a tough guy!!!
One of the best episodes of television ever produced. Heaven Sent is Doctor Who’s “Ozymandias.” Capaldi is the best doctor ever, the music was incredible, the script was mind bending, and the directing was on a whole new level. 10/10
