Issue 434 of of Doctor Who Magazine is out this week, and inside it’s all about The Doctor’s Wife, as its writer, Neil Gaiman, talks exclusively about his anticipated episode.

“If this episode works like it’s meant to work,” he tells DWM, “you will go from curiosity, thinking ‘who is this person?’ – to amusement – ‘She’s very funny, she’s mad, oh my God, she’s biting him, she’s a bit weird!’ – to irritation – ‘Why is she so high and mighty?’ – to heartbreak, genuine, absolute real heartbreak. And to joy.”

Also inside the issue, Episodes 3 (The Curse of the Black Spot), 4 (The Doctor’s Wife) and 5/6 (The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People) are previewed with never before seen photos and exclusive interviews with their writers. Hugh Bonneville also talks about becoming a pirate, and Steven Moffat presents another edition of his Production Notes.

Meanwhile, DWM crosses the pond to interview the stars on location in Utah as they film Series 6’s opening two-parter, before taking a trip down memory lane to relive some of the Second Doctor’s adventures as part of their countdown to 2013’s 50th anniversary.

Amy finds herself trapped inside a psychedelic nightmare as the comic strip, ‘Forever Dreaming’ by Jonathan Morris, reaches its startling conclusion, while the Time Team revisit the Ninth Doctor’s battle with the Slitheen in World War Three. Plus, the Fact of Fiction present their lowdown on the Series 2 adventure, The Girl in the Fireplace.

Doctor Who Magazine goes on sale on Thursday and also comes with a double-sided poster with the Impossible Astronaut on one side and Rory and River on the other.

hugh-bonneville-discusses-his-doctor-who-ban

Doctor Who guest star Hugh Bonneville has revealed that there has been “a slight embargo” on Doctor Who in his house since his son was left terrified by an episode.

As the Belfast Telegraph reports, the actor, who will be seen in this week’s episode, The Curse of the Black Spot, as the implacable Captain Avery, has revealed: “Slightly sore topic. My nine year old got so freaked out about Bill Paterson’s demise in the Daleks episode last year, he had some sleepless nights.”

However, they’ll be making an exception this week to watch his appearance together as a family. “It was annoying for me because I got them all recorded and had to wipe them all,” he said. “I’ll get the boxset and we’ll watch them leading up to this episode. Had I said I was going to be in SpongeBob SquarePants, he’d have been really thrilled.”

He finished: “I was a Jon Pertwee boy. That music haunted my childhood and always reminds me of being at my gran’s on a Saturday afternoon, after the football scores.”

The Curse of the Black Spot airs on Saturday at 6:15pm on BBC One and BBC One HD.

hugh-bonneville-talks-about-his-role-in-episode-3

The Express has released a new interview with Hugh Bonneville, in which he discusses his guest role as Captain Avery in The Curse of the Black Spot.

“For various reasons, the TARDIS has programmed itself to land on my ship,” he explains. “As a 17th-century pirate, I’m furious that this thing has arrived. We’re becalmed at sea and the Doctor has come and upset our equilibrium. The Time Lord has to walk the plank and that’s the end of the Doctor. Or is it?”

He adds: “As for the rest of the episode, I just swan around with a pistol, looking a bit bemused! The feeling I get about the whole story of this series is that it does address big universal themes, as well as being a roistering adventure. There’s this overarching theme questioning mortality, identity and who we are in this universe.”

The actor is also full of praise for Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, who he reveals were always “generous” with their time. “They’re obviously so pooped and could just go ‘ugh’ but actually they were terrific. They do crazy schedules, but Matt is the perfect host.”

karen-teases-an-unexpected-reveal-for-river-song

Is River Song the Doctor’s wife? Daughter? Stalker? All of the above? Well, stranger things have happened! According to Karen Gillan, the character’s long awaited reveal in the new series will come as a huge shock to viewers.

“There’s a really big cliffhanger at the end of Episode 7, and we find out who River Song is, which is really exciting,” the actress explains in a new interview with Wales Online. “I wanted to know for so long, since she first appeared in the David Tennant years. It’s quite unexpected.”

Regarding the guest stars lined up in Series 6, she said: “It’s amazing. We’ve got Lily Cole playing a really scary lady, and we’ve got some really great guys as well, like Hugh Bonneville, David Walliams and James Corden. These people volunteer to do it, so there’s always a nice atmosphere on set because they want to be there.”

You can watch her full interview, conducted at the Series 6 launch, below, however the video includes some clips and other tidbits so don’t click play if you’re avoiding spoilers!

Elsewhere, the Liverpool Echo has a new interview with Steven Moffat, in which he describes the perfect Doctor Who monster. “It’s not just that they look scary and can kill you,” he said. ”There’s something of a nightmare about them!” You can watch that report below, but once again don’t play if don’t want any spoilers. You’ve been warned!

The Doctor, Amy and Rory return on Saturday 23rd April in The Impossible Astronaut.
