The Weeping Angels have been revealed as the best loved Doctor Who villains!

In a recent poll conducted by Radio Times, which had over 10,000 votes, the terrifying stone statues came out on top as the most loved monsters, with 49.4% of the result. They were first introduced in Series 3’s Blink, and returned with a vengeance in The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone in Series 5. We haven’t seen the last of them, as they are gearing up for a final battle with the Ponds in Series 7.

One was seen in the recent Olympic-themed mini-episode Good as Gold, so don’t blink!

In second place were the Daleks, who will also be back, and “worse than ever”, when the Doctor returns to our screens this autumn. Scares ahead, but did the best foe win…?

The Silence came 3rd (11.8%), the Master 4th (8.6%), and the Vashta Nerada 5th (6%).

I can go along with that; the two proper TV stories in which they have appeared have been two of Who’s very best. I would suggest that the absence of what has always been considered Dr Who’s second main monster, The Cybermen, from the top five speaks volumes about how badly they’ve been used.

I have trouble accepting the Weeping Angels as the best loved monsters personally.

They had potential in Blink, but after that, their appearances mean I wouldn’t care if I don’t see the Weeping Angels again, even though I know they’re part of Series 7.

Breaking necks, anything with enough strength can do that, whereas sending people back in time and living off the life they should have had was better and more original.

I agree with TWWL about the Cybermen being badly used. Particularly in Series 5 and 6, the Cybermen appearances have been quite bad. Every appearance has been quite a weak cameo and they’ve presented next to no threat whatsoever.

To be honest though, I’d have a hard time choosing my favourite Doctor Who monster because I’m not that bothered about any of them. They’re all entertaining in their own ways, of course, but I’m not particularly interested in any one Doctor Who monster.

I loved the Weeping Angles in Blink and thought they worked really well! However series five ruined them a bit for me, the whole point of the Angels was that they send you back in time, yet in series five we see them breaking backs and actually moving which all took the threat away for me :L Still not bad but I think other monsters rate higher!

Oh, I think there have been few creepier moments in Who than when you actually saw an Angel’s head turn!

I liked both Angels tbh. I don’t know what was wrong with them in TOA/FAS really. I liked that idea as rather than killing people for fun, they were trying to create an army of Weeping Angels as with the Aplans who were killed and turned into Angels. Pleased they are back in Rory and Amy’s final episode.

The Weeping Angels in Blink were absolutely brilliant and I was really scared while watching the episode. Then the Series 5 Angels lost some of the scariness. They seemed nicer somehow – it’s more cruel to send someone back in time where they would never see their loved ones again, but still have to live on, than to break their neck and end it right away… Still, I understand why they won this poll.

    The Weeping Angels (49.4%)
    The Daleks (17%)
    The Silence (11.84%)
    The Master (8.66%)
    The Vashta Nerada (6.81%)
    The Cybermen (2.53%)
    Davros (2.2%)
    The Zygons (0.69%)
    The Ice Warriors (0.54%)
    The Sontarans (0.33%)

When you look at the above – it shows that this poll reflects the current series and does not really include original series monsters. Other than the Zygons and The Ice Warriors, both of whom have never appeared in the new series, there are a lot of great monsters missing. I still think the Daleks are still the best as they are the most original aliens ever created. 95% of the remaining monsters are based on man, even the angels. I certainly don’t believe the Silence should even be in this poll, they are the opposite of the angels and have nothing original about them at all.
