Steven reveals the Daleks will be “worse than ever”
Steven Moffat has said that the Daleks will be “worse than ever” when they make a return in the new series.
The Doctor will once again hear the dreaded, infamous cry of “Exterminate!” in the first episode of Series 7 in the autumn, and it won’t just be the most recent design making an appearance. About their comeback, the showrunner teased: “The Daleks are back and they are worse than ever. Just wait until you see what they are going to do. If I even told you the title you would say, ‘Ah’.”
Steven was presented with the Special Award for his writing at last night’s TV BAFTA.

Ooh, this is exciting! I know it doesn’t tell us anything new whatsoever, but I’m one of those odd people who enjoy all the little teasers. I’m also a sucker for good titles, possibly because I’m terrible at coming up with them myself.
Please don’t be hype! I can’t take any more letdowns!
@Grace
Thats the wrong attitude going in !
Daleks “worse than ever”? That’s what a lot of viewers thought after “Evolution of the Daleks”! AND THEN that’s what a whole lot more viewers thought after “Victory of the Daleks”! How much worse can Moffat make them???
Sorry. Just being a jerk.
I TRULY hope that the Daleks are back and more b*d*ss than ever in Series 7!
I’m not really certain why the title can’t be revealed. Because it will make me go “Ah”, apparently. But the titles are always revealed at some point, weeks ahead of telecast. In fact, some of the first titles should be showing up in DWMagazine VERY SOON!
I’m eagerly anticipating the series seven premier. Ever single Dalek design ever in one episode but if that is the case Davros should make an appearance as well.
I too hope it isn’t just baseless hype too, because Moffat might have something here, with all the different generations of Daleks.
They do need to be worse than ever. Even I can admit that the Daleks have been too easily beaten in recent years, especially considering they were the Daleks that fought the Time War against the Time Lords, and yet the Doctor is somehow able to always beat them on his own.
The Daleks are a tricky villain to get right. Because they’ve been in Doctor Who since the second story and are so iconic the writers have to come up with new ways of making them scary.
IMO, the only time they’ve ever really been threatening in the New Series is in Series One with ‘Dalek’, because it was just a single Dalek mindlessly killing everyone in sight, showing just how scary they can be.
Having all generations of Daleks in a single episode is going to be tough. I’ve no doubt about explaining how all the Daleks are there, because it’s been done in the past, but giving them all something to do is the hard part.
@Andrew
I like Davros, but in this case I think he should stay away. Apart from Remembrance of the Daleks, where he only appears for 5 minutes, in every story he’s been it feels like somehow the Daleks are downgraded and second-rate villains. Davros becomes the focus of everything.
I would love to see a story though where it’s just Davros without the Daleks. It’s been done in a Big Finish audio drama, so there’s no reason why it can’t be done on TV.
It’s been long enough that I’m acvtually looking forward to the Dalek story; Moffat did the right thing by giving them a break, as opposed to flogging them with a new story every series. It’s also VERY exciting that Moff himself is actually taking them on in a script he’s written. Can’t wait.
@Borusa
‘Dalek’ was my favourite Dalek story too, and you’re right – the threat that a single Dalek can pose is much, much scarier than hundreds of thousands of Daleks defeated in a single move. Particularly because that single Dalek never was defeated, really. It destroyed itself.
What I do admire in Moffat’s treatment of the Daleks is how he’s attempted to do new things with them. Personally, I don’t like the new paradigm (primarily because I can’t find massive multicoloured plasticky things as scary as compact bronze armoured things) but I do admire the fact that he’s trying to reinvent what we can do with them a little. Hopefully this new story will do so in a less… plasticky way than the last!
@TSG
I think the whole eyes in the ground-thing reinforces that idea. To be honest, Episode One does appear to be a very interesting episode just with its use of ideas: two villains, hundreds of Daleks, large landscapes etc. It seems like more than enough to justify not having a Dalek-based episode last year.
I really hope that all the old models make a guest entry; that would be fantstic! I also agree with TSG that the new paradigm is far too plasticky and colourful. I mean yellow!? Yellow is a far too cheerful colour for a Dalek. Hate and anger, all that the Daleks represent, really just isn’t yellow.
Sorry, had a bit of a rant there :). Really though, I can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with now.
I hated the colourful plasticky Daleks too, but I liked that they were taller than usual.
I actually quite liked the look of the newer daleks; apart from the weird hump/slouch thing when they’re side on.
@TWWL
Yeah the daleks’ hump thing was really weird. I didn’t like the overall look of them.
I have avoided this conversation because basically I think this will follow the usual SM format. 25 minutes Soap Opera surrounding Amy because SM thinks she is the main character and the remaining 20 minutes with a fluffed Dalek Story. Unfortunately SM arrogance has made me realise that until he is gone, Doctor Who will continue to be a shadow of it’s former brilliance.
