David Tennant’s chatted to SFX about dusting off the Tenth Doctor’s converse for the 50th anniversary special.
The actor described it as “lovely” to go back to Cardiff then revealed how filming the movie-length episode brought back fond memories of his own time in the TARDIS. “It meant so much to me and it was such a happy time, so I’m grateful it was a happy time again,” he explained. “There’s always that danger of going back to something then it doesn’t turn out how you remember it, but that wasn’t the case with this.”
He added that he “always expected” to be involved in the festivities and discussed the “fresh challenges” he faced in returning to his iconic role. “When there is more than one of you it becomes a slightly different character,” he said. “The Doctor tends to lead each scene he’s in so when you’re sharing that you have a new relationship. It was good fun.”
Billie Piper’s previously said returning to play Rose for the 50th felt “like going home”.

As we countdown to the 50th special lest us forget we’ll also get another anniversary treat in November in the form of An Adventure in Space and Time – woo hoo!
The docudrama will tell the story behind Who’s creation and its writer Mark Gatiss attended Comic Con earlier this month to reveal a few teasers about what fans can expect. Joined by David Bradley, who’ll play First Doctor William Hartnell in the one-off biopic, the pair participated in a string of promo interviews and you can read our round up of them below.
Firstly they spoke to HitFix about being given the opportunity to honour the series in “a straight drama about real people”. “It’s a companion to the main show,” Mark explained. “It’s a melancholy story for William Hartnell. He got this incredible part but had to stop.”
“I wanted to tell this story for a long time,” he continued in an interview with TV Equals. “I grew up on the story of how these unlikely people got together to make this show.” David added: “It was a wonderful accident that Sydney Newman was there as the BBC’s female producer. She had the courage to stick to her guns and she always fought for it.”
“Mark approached me about a year ago so I jumped at the chance,” the actor told SFX. “I just wanted to do justice to William and his living relatives. He could be quite difficult at times as he was demanding of himself and wanted the best from people around him.”
He told CraveOnline how he prepared for the role, explaining: “I watched the old DVDs to capture his voice and essence as I was intrigued by the complexities in his character.”

Steven Moffat has shared his Twelfth Doctor audition scripts and you can read one of them right here!
The extracts – which won’t actually feature in any upcoming episodes – are being used in the search for the next Doctor.
“You’ll learn little about Number 12,” the showrunner teased. “It’s generic Doctor stuff, so with the proviso there’s nothing to learn here (won’t stop you trying, I know!) here is – sort of, kind of, not really – the first scene for Number 12…”
The scene, below, involves Clara reacting to the new Time Lord. What do you think of it?
INT. TARDIS
[The new Doctor is checking out the new body. Clara, watching. It's been a few minutes, they're both still adjusting.]
THE DOCTOR: Right then, eyesight. Not bad, bit blue. Ears – not pointy, right way up, more or less level. Face – well I’ve got one. Oh, no – French!
CLARA: French.
THE DOCTOR: I’ve deleted French! Plus all cookery skills, and the breast stroke. And hopping. Never mind hopping, who needs to hop. Ohh, the kidneys are interesting. Never had that before – interesting kidneys.
CLARA: Are you all right?
THE DOCTOR: I don’t know, do I look all right?
CLARA: I don’t know.
THE DOCTOR: How’s the face? Seems all right from the inside. Nice action, responsive. Bit less heft on the chin. How is it?
CLARA: It’s… okay.
THE DOCTOR: Okay?
CLARA: It’s a bit… you know.
THE DOCTOR: No I don’t, I haven’t seen it yet.
CLARA: Maybe it’s just new.
THE DOCTOR: Have you changed height?
CLARA: No.
THE DOCTOR: You sure?
CLARA: It’s you, your height, you’re the one who’s changed.
THE DOCTOR: And look at your nose.
CLARA: What about my nose?
THE DOCTOR: It was really cute, I loved your nose, you should’ve kept it.
CLARA: I did, it’s the same nose, it’s the same all of me. You’re the one who’… regenerated, whatever you call it.
THE DOCTOR: Are you wearing a smell?
CLARA: Do you mean perfume?
THE DOCTOR: Yes, I suppose it could be perfume.
CLARA: You’ve always liked that perfume, you said so.
THE DOCTOR: No I didn’t, that was the Doctor.
CLARA: You’re the Doctor.
THE DOCTOR: Yes, I suppose I am. That’s going to take a bit of getting used to.
CLARA: Yeah, it really is.

Matt Smith has shared his delight at being given the chance to work opposite both David Tennant and John Hurt.
The three will share the limelight for the 50th anniversary special of the show as the Eleventh Doctor star told Vulture that the first scene they filmed together involved them flying the TARDIS. “Our first shot was in the TARDIS,” he teased. “We all flew it and I remember saying to them, “I don’t want to hog the flying duties”. Literally, we had that conversation! David flies his TARDIS too.”
The “movie-length” special will also mark the return of Billie Piper as Rose Tyler who Matt described as “a great friend”. He added: “Billie is wonderful. I am very fond of her.”

Steven Moffat headed down the red carpet at last weekend’s Comic Con for the inevitable hot topic of conversation.
The showrunner was pressed on all the latest Twelfth Doctor developments confirming that “the search has barely begun” for Matt Smith’s successor. “Once we announced and slightly earlier than we had all intended, that Matt is leaving, every newspaper was all about that,” he told Digital Spy. “So you kind of want to sit tight while all that’s going on. But there’s a lot of pressure and excitement.”
He revealed the Twelfth Doctor era “will be very different” because of the now “familiar world” that will be around him (or her). “Clara is continuing and Vastra, Jenny and Strax are popular characters,” he said. “Last time there was no one around to convince him he was the Doctor, because Amy had no idea! But we can push him a bit further this time…”

Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman had a chat with Digital Spy at Comic Con to tease the two remaining episodes the show has coming up later this year.
In the first, its 50th anniversary special, the Eleventh Doctor and Clara will face the mysteries of John Hurt’s Doctor (and then some) as Jenna describes the “movie-length” special as “transformational”. “The show can be constantly new and brave and bold,” she said. “50 years later then this episode just sends it off in a completely new direction.”
After that it will be time for the Eleventh Doctor to hand in the keys to the TARDIS as he bows out in this year’s “spectacular” Christmas special. As Matt explained his decision to go, he reaffirmed that being part of the ‘Who’ phenomenon has changed his life. “I’ve had four wonderful years and been on brilliant journeys,” he admitted. “Part of me felt, after the 50th, it was time to go. Steven’s written 28 pages and I am sure it’ll be fitting.”
