The BBC has today (Monday) released more intriguing details about Series 9 of Doctor Who.
This week filming has commenced on the third block which consists of two period adventures, The Girl Who Died by Jamie Mathieson and Steven Moffat, and The Woman Who Lived by Catherine Tregenna.
Jamie’s previous episodes include Mummy on the Orient Express and Flatline while Torchwood writer Catherine Tregenna is contributing to Doctor Who for the first time.
The episodes are being helmed by Poldark director Ed Bazalgette and guest stars for the block include Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams, whose unnamed character will “challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways”, comedian Rufus Hound, Tom Stourton, Ariyon Bakare, Simon Lipkin, Ian Conningham, Murray McArthur, Barnaby Kay, John Voce and Struan Rodger. Further casting for Series 9 is expected to be announced in due course.

The BBC has today (Monday) confirmed that Maisie Williams will be guest starring in Series 9 of Doctor Who.
The Game of Thrones star will play a mysterious character who “is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways” when he returns to our screens this autumn.
The stories are being directed by Ed Bazalgette whose most recent work includes Poldark.
“I’m so excited to be working on Doctor Who as it’s such a big and important part of British culture,” Maisie has commented. “I can’t wait to meet the cast and crew and start filming.”
Steven Moffat added: “We’re thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us on Doctor Who. It’s not possible to say too much about who or what she’s playing but this time the Doctor may just be out of his depth. We know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.”

April is almost upon us but there’s still enough time for our latest Fan of the Month to march – *ahem* – forward.
Flying the flag for Whovians around the world this month is Hunter, aged 16, from New York who put himself forward because Doctor Who has taught him to be more optimistic and hopeful about life. He says: “Thanks to the Doctor, I am the dreamer of improbable dreams.”

Big Finish have announced Doctor Who: Doom Coalition, a “breathtaking” new audio series featuring the Eighth Doctor, which will be launched in the autumn.
Paul McGann will be back as his incarnation of the iconic Time Lord who will be pushed to his limits when he is recalled to Gallifrey by the Time Lords. The 16 part adventure, spanning 4 boxsets, will also star Nicola Walker as companion Liv Chenka while Mark Bonnar will lend his voice to a mysterious new foe known only as The Eleven. Hattie Morahan will also join in episode two as new companion Helen Sinclair.
“Doom Coalition is unlike anything we’ve attempted before,” said director Ken Bentley. “It’s on a scale that we hope will satisfy loyal listeners. It’s also a new standalone adventure so it’s a great place to start if you’re listening to Doctor Who on audio for the very first time.”
Doom Coalition: Part 1 is released in October 2015 and its three subsequent installments will follow suit throughout 2016 and 2017. It forms part of Big Finish’s extended licensing deal which guarantees the production of their new Doctor Who audios until “at least” 2020.
Big Finish have today announced that their Doctor Who license has been extended which means they will continue to release tie-in audio adventures until “at least” 2020.
The company has been producing Doctor Who stories since 1999 and BBC Worldwide have given them the green light to extend their ever growing range of original Classic Series escapades for another five years.
They are already planning new stories for 2017 and 2018 and later this year they’ll be launching a new UNIT spin off.
Fans can look forward to more stories featuring the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors as well as The Fourth Doctor Adventures which are also set to continue. A new era awaits for the Eighth Doctor, too, as he faces the Doom Coalition in the follow up to Dark Eyes.

Last month we opened a poll to determine the best series of the last decade to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the revived series. And oh, what a decade it has been!
The first episode, Rose, aired exactly 10 years ago today, on Saturday 26th March 2005, and everybody’s favourite Time Lord has been running ever since. It’s been the trip of the lifetime and we wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
2008 was a momentous year for the show. The fourth series welcomed back Donna Noble as the Tenth Doctor’s full time travelling companion and together they faced the likes of the Sontarans, the Vespiform and the Vashta Nerada. This series also introduced River Song as well as Jenny, the Doctor’s daughter, and it all culminated in one of the most epic stories in the show’s history when the Doctor’s allies joined forces to conquer Davros and the Daleks.
It’s fitting, then, that you’ve named it the best series of NuWho to date, with a landslide 32% of the final vote. In at second place was Series 2 with 16%, followed by Series 8 in third place with 15%. A huge thank you to everybody who voted. Are you pleased with the results? Yes, it really has been that long! Doctor Who returned to our screens exactly 10 years ago today, on Saturday 26th March 2005, and nothing was ever the same again.
It’s safe to say that reinventing the series for a 21st century audience was an almighty risk for the BBC, and that’s not to mention Russell T Davies who quite literally put his entire career on the line. It all paid off, though (and then some!), as TV’s favourite Time Lord was welcomed back with opens arms and the show has been going from strength to strength ever since. Time sure does fly when you’re having fun!
Over 100 episodes, four Doctors (plus a secret one nobody knew about!), a plethora of companions and a menagerie of monsters, both new and old, later, it truly has been the trip of a lifetime and we wouldn’t have missed it for the world. Here’s to the next 10 years!

The Doctor Who cast and crew attended their latest read through today (Thursday) as work on Series 9 continues.
The show’s official Twitter has confirmed that filming on Episode 5 will be commencing shortly but nothing else about the episode, including its writer or director, has been revealed (and don’t bother trying to zoom into the script on the picture below either – we’ve already tried and failed!)
Production on Peter Capaldi’s second series commenced in January and thus far four episodes have been completed.
These comprise of the currently unnamed Episodes 3 and 4 (a two-parter written by Toby Whithouse which has been described as “one of the scariest adventures yet”) and the two-part premiere, The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar, penned by Steven Moffat and directed by Hettie MacDonald. Filming for the season opener has recently been taking place in Tenerife and it will feature the return of Michelle Gomez as Missy.
