One of the biggest mysteries surrounding Series 9 will finally be resolved later this evening as Maisie Williams prepares to leave her mark on the Doctor Who universe.

The Game of Thrones actress will guest star in tonight’s episode, The Girl Who Died, as a mysterious Viking girl called Ashildr. It all sounds simple enough, but since her casting was announced back in March, we’ve repeatedly been told that she’s actually a particularly “significant” figure – “cosmic”, in fact – “who will challenge the Doctor in unexpected ways”. Whatever that means!

Hell, it’s even been foretold that she could be “good or bad”, so it’s safe to say that the heightened ambiguity of the situation has sent our fevered minds into a speculative frenzy. All of our questions will finally be answered tonight but you can while away the remaining hours by leaving your last minute theories in the comments section below. Who is Ashildr?

Who - or what - is Ashildr?

    I voted for anagram or code word. It would make more sense if Ashildr would be a code word for something, as the GOT cross over/River Song/Clara options seem too whacked out and bordering a cheesy story line in the making. Also I do care so I didn’t vote that either. :P

    I don’t think its any of those. She is someone new who the Doctor will I’m.sure have to save in some way and whatever he does will affect her making her some kind of immortal as how on earth is she able to appear to him in a futuristic space suit in the future unless she’s an immortal? So that’s my theory a brave young girl who gets messed up in some kind of experiment or The Doctor is involved in some way

    Found online that it means God Battle in scandinavian. Also Davros was banging on about a prophecy about a Dalek/ Dr hybrids at the start of the series. The Dr said that Ashildr is now a hybrid, maybe Davros was half right in that there would be a Dr Hybrid but it would be human/Dr not Dalek/doctor.
    As far as God battle goes he did give Ashildr’s father a second nano bot thing. That would mean a second person could become immortal, gods are immortal, maybe they won’t get on hence God battle! So there is a bit of a ‘God battle’ and the Dr is then racked with guilt cos he caused it all as a result of anger and guilt when he gave Ashildr the chip in the first place rather than Galafreyan logic. Which would have said let her due and don’t make any gods as it buggers up time.

    though i have a feeling it could be a clara arc as she seems to more dr than the dr at times how good would it be if she became omega and started gallifrey from the start

    just checked something out what a shill is here is the answer
    a person who poses as a customer in order to decoy others into participating, as at a gambling house, auction, confidence game, etc.
    2.
    a person who publicizes or praises something or someone for reasons of self-interest, personal profit, or friendship or loyalty.
    the dr at the end is for doctor of course

    Ashildr is a combination of the ancient Norse words áss (God/Deity/Cheiftain) and Shildr (Of battle/war).
    Ashildr = God of battle = Leader of war = Minister of war
    I think I cracked the Moffat Conundrum.

    Noticing loads of predictions that it will explain Captain Jack’s immortality. Uh, duh – that was explained from the outset (immortality bestowed upon him when Rose brought him back to life at end of Parting Of The Ways). Call yourself fans?! ;)

    @Clara-Anne T.
    I don’t think it can even be river, unless it was one of the random unseen regenerations, remember in Nazi Germany she transformed into adult river song, what’s more she was always part timelord.

    When we finally get rid of Clara, Ashildr’ll end up being the Dr’s new companion.

    It will be a sad day when Clara leaves, she is by far the best looking companion ever!!!

    Let’s look at her name: ASHILDR. Now, let’s reorganize the letters: ASIDRHL. Take the last two letters H & L. H is the 8th letter of the alphabet and L is the 12th letter of the alphabet. Add them together and you get 20, and the 20th letter of the alphabet is T. So you’ve now got ASIDRT. Reorganize the new letters and you get TARDIS. So I think she’s somehow going to end up as a key component in the creation of the Doctor’s Tardis. That way she CAN fly all over the universe with him, like she wanted after she realized that she was immortal.

    I totally agree. So many lines that hint to this. Didn’t catch the morph though. I’ll watch again though. Best episode ever!

    Ashil means original in Islam.
    Ashil dr = original Dr.
    Red herring,coincidence or clue?

    With River Song coming back for the xmas special, maybe Ashildr is the child of her and the Doctor? The Doctor has said that he was a father at one point, and in the original series, was a grandfather.

    We will find out soon…

    Hey, I loved Amy! She was my favourite assistant by far. I’ll be interested to find out whether the return of River Song in the Christmas special will stir up any bad memories for the Doctor, as she is Amy’s daughter. I think it was Amy’s fiestyness that attracted me to her.

    @Natasha
    Also, I think that @clare is right, and she is the original Doctor (somehow… I haven’t figured out the logic yet).
