Colin Baker has announced he would support the producer’s decision to cast the first female Doctor claiming that “there’s absolutely no reason” to be against the idea.
The actor who portrayed the Time Lord’s sixth incarnation in the 80’s responded to all the fevered speculation in a recent interview on Flicks and the City. Actresses such as Olivia Colman, Emma Watson and Sheridan Smith have been put forward for the coveted role, while Helen Mirren has said “it’s absolutely time” for a change to the tradition.
Colin admitted: “Surely the Doctor must be in touch with his feminine side to an extent?”
The former TARDIS traveller – describing the part as “a rare privilege” – also explained why he thinks the series continues to captivate 50 years on. “It’s still going because it’s very good,” he said. “It hit the ground running at the right time. It’s all about the timing. As soon as they did that very first regeneration, their precedent was set and it was off.”

Steven Moffat has confirmed the Eleventh Doctor will have a “traditional regeneration” in this year’s Christmas Special.
Matt Smith will step down from the role that has made him a household name in the “spectacular” episode that will air on Christmas Day. According to the show’s lead writer there is only one way to introduce the next incarnation. “He’ll fall and the twelfth shall rise and you’ll see all that in the closing moment,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “Quite honestly, what could be better than that? It’s just too exciting.”
He insisted that despite the fevered speculation about the Twelfth Doctor, a decision has not yet been made. “We will announce the new Doctor within days of finalising the new Doctor,” he said. “It is hard to keep any kind of a secret so we will go public pretty fast.”

The world’s biggest Dalek has been unveiled at York Maze!
Created by farmer and Doctor Who fan Tom Pearcy to mark the 50th anniversary of the show, the Dalek is over 300m – 1000ft – long and it has been cut out of an 18 acre field of over one million living maize.
“Like most kids I grew up watching Doctor Who from behind the sofa and fell in love with the show,” Tom said. “I wanted to create a piece of art as a tribute to the 50th anniversary.”
He added: “I wanted to make it interactive so visitors could have their own adventures.”
The maze which also includes images of William Hartnell and Matt Smith was unveiled at a special event last Friday (12th July) with Sixth Doctor Colin Baker on hand to celebrate its grand opening. “It is fantastic to see the interest there is in the 50th anniversary of the show,” he said. “I have been invited to events all over the world but what York Maze have created has to be one of the most imaginative ways to celebrate that I have seen.”
York Maze is the largest maze in Europe and it is open from 13th July to 2nd September.

Eve Myles has been reflecting on Torchwood’s journey from cult show to global phenomenon in a new interview with Red Carpet News TV saying its progression was “unbelievable”.
The actress, who’s known to fans as Gwen Cooper, admitted the success of the series took all involved by surprise – the Doctor Who spin off began its life on BBC Three then moved to BBC One where it attracted 7 million viewers for its third series. “It’s just a big bold sexy fun show and people really took it to their hearts and we appreciate that,” she said.
She explained: “If we had thought for one second at the read through on the first day it would become this huge beast, I don’t know how any of us would have reacted. We had no idea how this would happen. We’ve been off air for 3 years now but it is still so alive.”
Looking to its future she said: “All I’ll say is that when they call John and I will be there.”
Torchwood’s future is “in limbo”, but discuss where you would like it to go next here…
The composer, who has worked on the show since its return in 2005, has written the new piece – entitled Song for Fifty – as a celebration of the Time Lord’s half a century on TV.
It’ll be performed live for the first time in front of audiences at this weekend’s Prom at the Royal Albert Hall and Murray’s said “it’s a real privilege” to give fans something new.
“Because I have been in the Royal Albert Hall twice for Doctor Who, I know how the fans react,” he told Mark Lawson on Front Row last night. “It is great to be able to write for an audience you know, speak to everyone in the room. I thought it would be appropriate to write something for the birthday. The last words in it are ‘Happy birthday Doctor you”, which I’m sure the audience is going to mishear. You must never call him by that name!”

The secret behind John Hurt’s role in the 50th anniversary special has seemingly been revealed in a new interview with one of the show’s crew members.
The actor was introduced as the Doctor in the closing scene of the Series 7 final The Name of the Doctor with viewers left on tenterhooks about the story behind him – until now.
It appears series costumer designer Howard Burden has let slip just ‘who’ he is in an interview with the Telegraph.
For those of you who want to stay away from big spoilers we’ve hidden his quote below…
“There was a gap between Paul McGann being the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston and we didn’t see a regeneration. John fills the gap. He’s a past Doctor, not a future Doctor.”
There we have it. Was it what you expected? Have your say in the comments – spoilers!
The episode, starring Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt, airs on 23rd November.
