An actress who has previously been associated with Doctor Who has emerged as the bookies’ new favourite to take over the reigns from Jenna Coleman as the Time Lord’s coveted companion, according to reports.
Fresh Meat and Glue star Faye Marsay – who portrayed Shona McCullough in the 2014 festive special, Last Christmas – currently has odds of 6/1 to be unveiled as Peter Capaldi’s next co-star when the franchise’s current leading lady, Clara Oswald, departs during the latest series. Faye herself has previously admitted that she’d return “in a heartbeat”.
While it hasn’t been revealed exactly when Clara will part ways with the Doctor for the last time, her exit will mean that there will be a vacancy in the TARDIS for the first time since 2012. However, the immediate future of the show itself currently remains up in the air with recent rumours suggesting that the BBC will put it on hiatus next year to accommodate a cast overhaul, despite the fact Steven Moffat has allegedly signed up to helm Series 10.
Speculation surrounding the incoming companion looks set to continue, however, with Mark Gatiss recently discussing the possibility of a male sidekick. What do you think? Would Faye Marsay be the right choice or is there someone else who you think would better fit the bill?

Steven Moffat has confirmed that Jenna Coleman had originally planned to leave Doctor Who at the end of Series 8 last year.
The showrunner has told the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine that Death in Heaven was Clara’s final episode before her real life alter ego attended the read through and had a last minute change of heart. “She asked me if she could be in the Christmas episode so I said, ‘OK, so I’ll write you out at Christmas instead’,” he explained. “But then she read it and changed her mind again!”
He added: “The truth is, though, I never wanted her to go. With Last Christmas, I’d already written the alternative version where she stayed, and I preferred that version. I didn’t want to lose her. She’s an amazing actress and she never stops working to make Clara better. So I was very happy to go the extra mile to make sure we could keep her.”
The actress has revealed that it’s “wonderful” to be back for Series 9, which is currently being filmed. It’s two-part series premiere, The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar, will feature the return of Michelle Gomez as Missy. It’s due to air in the autumn.
