Ben Wheatley has claimed that his forthcoming Doctor Who episodes are “more like Classic Who” in terms of their story and structure.
The director is helming the opening two episodes of Series 8, currently being filmed in Cardiff, which will be the first full adventures to star Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor.
“With somebody like Peter, he’s a massive Doctor Who fan,” Ben explained. “So he knows Doctor Who inside out.”
He continued: “Everything he does is very carefully planned and thought about. You look at his career and his performances and they’re all so brilliant but all so different as well.”
Ben, whose notable films include Sightseeers and A Field in England, added that he looks forward to watching his Doctor Who episodes with his son, who’s a huge fan of the show. “But it’s been very geeky for me too,” he noted. “Especially going into the TARDIS and I held the sonic screwdriver for the first time the other day. It’s been very, very exciting.”
Episode 1 of Series 8 is written by Steven Moffat, while Episode 2 is penned by Phil Ford.

“He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past,” Peter commented. “Simple and stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing – just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord!”
Showrunner Steven Moffat added: “New Doctor, new era, new clothes… Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over. Capaldi is suited and booted and he’s coming to get you!”
