david-receives-special-recognition-award

Huge congratulations to David Tennant who was the recipient of a surprise Special Recognition award at tonight’s National Television Awards!

The actor received the prestigious accolade in honour of his contributions to stage and screen and his speech was preceded by a celebratory montage during which familiar faces – including Billie Piper, Russell T Davies and Catherine Tate – paid tribute to their friend and colleague. One of David’s most iconic roles, of course, was as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who which he originally played from 2005 to 2010.

It turned out to be the only cause for celebration for Doctor Who at the ceremony however. The show itself lost out in the only category in which it was nominated as Downton Abbey was unveiled as the nation’s Best Drama. Commiserations to the cast and crew in Cardiff.

On a brighter note, Doctor Who has been shortlisted in the category every year since its revival back in 2005, out of which it’s won a grand total of 6 times, so it’s not all bad news!

bbc-planning-new-torchwood-radio-plays

Great news for Torchwood fans – the show will be returning (sort of) in the form of “three or four” new radio plays, its leading man has confirmed!

John Barrowman, who plays the programme’s protagonist Captain Jack Harkness, announced the news during a recent press conference for his latest project Arrow. “We’re doing three or four radio plays for the BBC,” he elaborated. “My sister and I are discussing the possibility of writing one of them and whether or not that leads to something new on TV, nobody knows. It’s whether or not the BBC want to do it.”

The Doctor Who spin off was last on our screens in 2011 but it’s been “in limbo” since its ill-fated fourth series Miracle Day which was met with largely unfavourable reviews. Fans and critics alike panned the show for abandoning its Welsh roots by relocating to America.

Full details about the new radio plays are unknown but John did suggest they’ll be a mix of “character based” stories and ones that “bring the team back together”, though just which members of the ‘team’ he’s referring to remains to be seen. Stick with us for all the latest!

doctor-who-continues-world-domination

The Doctor continued his mission of world domination with yet more record-breaking ratings throughout 2014.

Not only did Peter Capaldi’s debut series at the helm of the TARDIS attract an average audience of 7.4 million at home in the UK (hailed as “outstanding” by the BBC’s Director of Television), it was also the highest rated season of Doctor Who ever on BBC America with an average of 2.035 million viewers. The Christmas Special, Last Christmas, was watched by 2.616 million which is double the audience of Matt Smith’s first festive outing, A Christmas Carol, in 2010.

The Twelfth Doctor’s first yuletide adventure was also a hit on Space in Canada on which it was watched by 792,000 viewers, making it the channel’s highest rated broadcast of 2014.

vote-for-doctor-who-at-the-ntas

Doctor Who has been nominated for Best Drama at the 2015 National Television Awards.

There shouldn’t be any doubt about it at all, of course, but it’s time for Whovians to unite and support the cause by clicking here. The final round of voting closes on Wednesday 21st January and the results will be revealed later that day.

Doctor Who won the title at last year’s ceremony where Matt Smith’s portrayal of the Eleventh Doctor was also named as the Best Drama Performance.

Sadly there’s no recognition for Peter or Jenna this year but we still love ‘em just the same!

The 2015 National Television Awards air on ITV on Wednesday 21st January from 7:30pm.

your-hopes-for-nuwhos-10th-anniversary

2015 marks the 10th anniversary of Doctor Who’s revived series and, while it’s by no means comparable to the scale of its 50th, it’s still a landmark that deserves to be recognised.

So far the BBC haven’t revealed any details about what – if anything – they’ll be doing to commemorate the milestone but that hasn’t stop fans speculating.

A popular rumour is that characters from the last 10 years will be returning for a series of new minisodes whereas some have called for them to be featured in the series itself.

Perhaps the Twelfth Doctor could phase an enemy from the last decade in Series 9 or maybe a comeback of one of his 21st century companions is on the cards? The possibilities are certainly endless and here’s where you can leave all of our NuWho 10th anniversary hopes and speculation. Let us know what you think the celebrations could entail below…

What should the proposed celebrations of NuWho's 10th anniversary entail?

russell-declines-10th-anniversary-invitation

Russell T Davies has revealed that he’s declined an offer from the BBC to return to Doctor Who for its 10th anniversary.

2015 marks a decade since the show’s return to our screens and the former showrunner, who oversaw its critically acclaimed revival, has admitted that he’s concentrating on his own projects and doesn’t have time to commit to a comeback. “I don’t know what they imagined,” he told Radio Times. “A talk or a convention perhaps. I just said no. To be honest, a programme can’t have its fiftieth and then it’s tenth. That’s just confusing. Let it carry on.”

He continued: “I made 60 episodes and did 40 Torchwoods and 40 Sarah Janes and there are an awful lot of ways to destroy the world in there. Steven Moffat invites me every year to come and write one. I love him and I love them and I love watching it, but here I am, moving on. I love Doctor Who but nothing is more important to me than my own stuff.”

It’s currently unknown what the BBC is planning, if anything, to mark the 10th anniversary of ‘NuWho’ but rumours suggest that new minisodes are being produced for the milestone.
