Doctor Who producer Brian Minchin has promised that Missy will “surprise everyone” in Series 9.
It has previously been confirmed that Michelle Gomez will be reprising her role as the renegade Time Lady for the two-part series opener, The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar, which has been described as the show’s “darkest plot ever”.
“Missy is brilliant and we couldn’t wait to work with Michelle again,” he told SFX. “It’s the perfect story to bring her back.”
He added: “But it’s not going to be Missy as you expect her to be. You will get to see some new sides to her this series and you will learn more about her relationship with the Doctor.”
Filming for Series 9 is currently underway. It’s scheduled to air on BBC One in the autumn.

The overriding theme of Series 9 has been described as “the glory days” by Doctor Who producer Brian Minchin.
Speaking to the latest issue of SFX, he revealed that the Twelfth Doctor will be “having the time of his life” when he returns to our screens for his second string of episodes later this year.
“As you saw in the Series 8 finale and Last Christmas, he’s answered his question of ‘Am I a good man?’,” he said. “So this year, we are telling the next stage of the adventure.”
He continued: “We’ve got a very confident Doctor and a very confident companion, who are both experts. So we’re pushing the storytelling further, to give us more scale of adventure.”
He teased that the adventures will be the “most dangerous” they’ve ever had. “The mission statement was bigger adventures and to go even further in time and space,” he elaborated.

Rufus Hound has confirmed that he will be playing a character called Sam Swift in the next series of Doctor Who.
The actor and comedian joined the guest star line up last month when it was announced that he’d be appearing in Episode 6 The Woman Who Lived, the read through for which was recently held at the show’s base in Cardiff.
“I had to make sure I played it cool, because inside I was not,” he told the official site. “I’m trying to be a professional, rather than a boy wanting to run around squeeing!”
No further details about his character have been revealed. Series 9 will air in the autumn.
