pearl-talks-bill-says-fan-response-is-amazing

It seems like everybody is talking about Pearl Mackie’s imminent Doctor Who debut, and over these last few days building up to its premiere, she’s been trying her best to catch up with them all.

Along with various magazine features and interviews on The One Show and Good Morning Britain, the actress has also been appearing on the radio to discuss all things Bill Potts. “She’s a normal girl,” she told Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2. “She could live next door to you. She doesn’t think before she speaks, but it’s one of the best things about her.”

Elsewhere, chatting to Scott Mills, conversation turned to her thoughts on who should be the Thirteenth Doctor (“Whoever they get for the part will be brilliant…”) after she admitted that the reality of being the new companion hasn’t quite sunk in yet. She said: “It’s like, I am on one of the biggest shows in the world. How often does that happen? So it’s strange.”

Meanwhile, answering fan questions on BBC Radio 1Xtra, she described the fan response thus far as “amazing”.  She continued: “They seem to be really excited about Bill and the new vibe that she’s going to bring. People are already dressing up as me and they haven’t even seen me on telly properly yet! I hope that they don’t take it all back after Saturday…”

who-invades-the-southbank-ahead-of-series-10

In 2015 the Twelfth Doctor journeyed to Abbey Road, the year before that it was Big Ben, and this year he has set his sights on another iconic London landmark.

The TARDIS materialised on the Southbank yesterday alongside a stunning piece of street artwork by 3D Joe & Max. It was all to promote the show’s long awaited return to our screens this weekend, as Peter Capaldi and Pearl Mackie were also on hand to check out the magnificent alien landscape. Pretty cool, huh?! Over 50 years later and he still knows how to make a scene…

Doctor Who has taken the cover of this week’s Big Issue to accompany their exclusive interview with Pearl Mackie.

The feature describes the incoming TARDIS resident as “the companion we’ve been waiting for” as the actress describes her on screen alter ego Bill Potts as “a real person” who is “very relatable”. “She gets things wrong which makes her accessible,” she continued. “Hopefully it will help make the world of Doctor Who accessible to new viewers too, because they’ll get to see a magical world through the eyes of a very grounded, down to earth girl.”

She added: “Because she is also new to the world, she has these discoveries. She might go into the TARDIS and say the iconic ‘bigger on the inside’ line, but there’s always something unexpected with Bill. Every day is a new adventure for her, a new world and a new time…”

pearl-steven-talk-bills-gentle-disappointment

Pearl Mackie and Steven Moffat have been discussing Bill’s motivations for stepping aboard the TARDIS in a new interview with the Telegraph.

Discussing her on screen alter ego, who will make her official debut when the series returns this Saturday, the actress revealed: “She’s not from an extraordinary background with extraordinary privilege, so when she’s presented with this amazing man, she’s completely fascinated. If you’re offered all of space and time and you spend your days serving chips, you’re not going to stay serving chips, are you?”

The outgoing showrunner elaborated: “It’s not been a life of tragedy, but it has been a life of gentle disappointment. There are sadnesses, but her life hasn’t been going all that well.”

With Series 10 exactly one week away, a new video has been released today in which Pearl Mackie, Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat introduce the new companion, Bill Potts.

According to her real life alter ego, Bill “doesn’t know very much about the world” but still “calls the Doctor out on a lot of things”, while the Twelfth Doctor actor has described her as “a regular human being” who “life hasn’t been great to”. The outgoing showrunner also explains how he approached her character in “a simple way”, as “somebody who asked a different bunch of questions”.

You can read the full interviews with Peter, Pearl and Steven – as well as one with Matt Lucas about all things Nardole – in the official media pack which was also released today.

rumour-pearl-to-leave-alongside-peter-at-xmas

Pearl Mackie will be leaving Doctor Who after just one series, according to a new rumour.

Although her character, Bill Potts, has yet to officially appear on screen (last year’s Friend from the Future scene notwithstanding…), everybody’s favourite – *ahem* – tabloid has claimed that the Twelfth Doctor’s incoming companion will be vacating the TARDIS with him when he departs in this year’s Christmas Special. Their respective exits will give new showrunner Chris Chibnall the chance to start from scratch when he takes over for Series 11.

So, while it seems nonsensical to be discussing Pearl’s exit before she has even started, we thought it was worth reporting nonetheless. Let us know your thoughts in the comments…
