peter-jackson-teases-who-episode

Peter Jackson has sent the Doctor Who fandom into a frenzy today (Monday) by posting a cryptic video message featuring none other than Peter Capaldi… and a Dalek!

It has been a long standing rumour that the Academy Award winning director of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies has been in talks to helm his own Doctor Who episode since he propositioned Steven Moffat “to name a time and place” back in 2012. Sadly, nothing has come of his “open-ended invitation” since, but it now may be closer than ever before to becoming a reality.

The man himself took to his Facebook page - here - to tease fans with a humorous sketch in which the Twelfth Doctor arrives to deliver a BBC contract. Reading between the lines, it certainly looks like it’s hinting at his official involvement but, as always, only time will tell…

next-time-hell-bent

Well, folks, this is it. 3 months later and the Doctor is about to face a struggle that will take him to the end of time itself. It can only be the Series 9 finale!

If you took everything from him, betrayed him, trapped him, and broke both his hearts… how far might the Doctor go? Returning to Gallifrey, our hero encounters the Time Lords to reveal his confession, but who – or what – is the Hybrid?

This year’s extended Doctor Who finale, Hell Bent, airs on Saturday 5th December at 8pm on BBC One.

Trapped in a world unlike any other he has seen, the Doctor faces the greatest challenge of his many lives. One final test. And he must face it alone. Pursued by the fearsome creature known only as the Veil, he must attempt the impossible. If he makes it through, Gallifrey is waiting…

If you’re like us, you’ll still be struggling to accept last week’s tragic events of Face the Raven, but fortunately tonight’s episode was a much more laid back affair, a subtle yet enjoyable escapade to ease us gently back into the wonders of time and space. Yeah, right!

Cut to 9pm and the entire Whovian fandom is spontaneously self-combusting. It’s hard to believe that the Series 9 finale is already here but it all kicked off in Heaven Sent as the Doctor faced the greatest challenge of his many lives. To add salt to the wound, he had to face this final, formidable test all by himself, but it wasn’t as if he was being pursued by a fearsome creature intent on scaring him to death or anything. That would just be too cruel.

Basically, you’re either bowing down to your Steven Moffat cardboard cut out or cursing his very existence right now. The first part of this year’s climactic conclusion was full of its fair share of shocks and surprises which all culminated in that almighty cliffhanger (seriously, it’s had Steven in a “state of panic” for months!) to bring us kicking and screaming into next week’s grand finale, aptly titled Hell Bent. First things first, though (we know, that’s a rare treat in Doctor Who), what did you think of Heaven Sent and all the twists and turns that came with it? Rate and Discuss the first part of this year’s Doctor Who finale, below…

steven-explains-rivers-xmas-comeback

Steven Moffat is interviewed in the new Radio Times – on sale now – about all things Doctor Who, including the forthcoming return of Alex Kingston in next month’s Christmas Special.

The popular character will make her grand comeback as the “kick ass hero” fans know and love in the festive episode, with its writer describing her reprisal as a personal treat. “I just really fancied it,” he explained. “I hadn’t written River for a couple of years and I missed her. Given that I’m knackered at the end of a series, I thought it would be nice for me to bring her back.”

Regarding the episode itself, which is “towards the comedy thriller end of the Doctor Who market”, the showrunner teased: “Series 9 gets quite dark towards the end, so Christmas was the perfect time to take it back up. It’s interesting, because the Doctor and River are now both sexy older people. The dynamic was always slightly strange with Matt Smith, but now they could actually be married. So it’s a great romp, but quite emotional at the end.”

peter-discusses-claras-exit-xmas-special

Peter Capaldi has been discussing Clara’s recent departure with the New Zealand Herald, suggesting that it might not be “quite what it seems”.

“We haven’t told a lie,” he affirmed. “The story is the story, but the Doctor isn’t going to rest. He won’t just sit back and accept that that’s the last time he’ll see her. The Doctor has really needed Clara. She’s made him more amenable to other people. My Doctor can be quite spiky and distant at times, but Clara tries to make him more accessible. He’ll find it difficult to not have a friend who can help him in that way.”

Regarding this year’s Christmas Special, the first picture from which surfaced online this week, the Twelfth Doctor actor teased: “River doesn’t really believe that I’m the Doctor as the last one she saw was Matt Smith, who was young and hot. Now she’s got a grey haired stick insect, so it’s all very light and funny.” Find out more about the festive episode, here.

Series 9 continues this Saturday on BBC One at 8:05pm as the Doctor faces the greatest challenge of his many lives in Heaven Sent, the first part of this year’s anticipated finale.

xmas-special-synopsis-guest-stars-revealed

The BBC have released the official synopsis for this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special.

As well as giving us an intriguing insight into what lies in store for the Doctor this season, the plot overview also confirms that Peter Capaldi will be joined by comedians Greg Davies and Matt Lucas in the yuletide escapade, which will serve as the centrepiece of BBC One’s Christmas Day festivities. As previously announced, the episode will also mark the return of Alex Kingston as River Song who will be meeting the Time Lord’s twelfth incarnation for the first time.

It’s Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas Carols and Comedy Antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy. King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) is furious, and his giant Robot bodyguard is out of control and coming for them all! Will Nardole (Matt Lucas) survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is?

All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time.

first-christmas-special-picture-revealed

Santa has come early for Doctor Who fans today as the BBC have just delivered the first picture from this year’s Christmas Special!

With just a month to go until the Time Lord vows to light up our festivities once again with his eleventh (count ‘em!) yuletide escapade, it looks like he’ll be unwrapping more than just a satsuma this season as he’ll also be reunited with River Song, played by Alex Kingston, who is meeting his twelfth incarnation for the first time. Her comeback was announced when filming began back in September.

While the image – below – tells us next to nothing about what to expect from the episode in question, it’s great to see one of the show’s most popular duos back together again, and let us not forget that River will be back as the “kick ass hero” that we all know and love! There might even be a “romance” (of sorts!) on the cards, too. It is Christmas, after all…

Above – Alex Kingston returns as River Song for a seasonal adventure with Peter Capaldi.

happy-birthday-doctor-who-4

23rd November is a special day in a Whovian’s calendar as it marks the anniversary of their favourite sci-fi hero!

Doctor Who premiered on this day back in 1963 which means that it’s now officially 52 years old, which isn’t too shabby for something that started out as a mild curiosity in a junkyard… Of course, this also means that it’s been 2 whole years since fans around the world united to save the day for The Day of the Doctor, the feature-length adventure which was aired on TV and in cinemas in over 94 countries to mark half a century of the Time Lord’s adventures.

So, Happy Birthday to Doctor Who and thank you for everything you’ve given us over the years. Here’s to the next 52 (and to the next 52 more after that, etc, etc…). We love you!

If you thought Face the Raven was a rollercoaster, wait until you get a load of this!

After tonight’s tragic events, the Doctor is now heading into this year’s series finale alone, and it all kicks off in Heaven Sent in which our hero finds himself trapped in a world that’s unlike any other he has seen before. And as he attempts the impossible, Gallifrey is waiting. Seriously.

The specially extended Heaven Sent airs on Saturday 28th November at 8:05pm on BBC One.

The Doctor and Clara, with their old friend Rigsy, find themselves in a magical alien world, hidden on a street in the heart of London. Sheltered within are some of the most fearsome creatures of the universe… and Ashildr! With a death sentence hanging over their heads, not all of the intruders will get out alive.

After last weekend’s innovative adventure (it was Sleep No More, by the way, just in case you’ve blocked it out of your memory for whatever reason), Doctor Who went back to what we know and love tonight for what’s been one of Series 9’s most anticipated episodes yet.

And, in true Doctor Who fashion, it was one of those anticipated episodes that we literally knew nothing about. Which is, you know, fun. We did know, however, that it would feature the return of two familiar faces in the form of Maisie Williams as Ashildr – who hadn’t seen the Doctor for centuries – and Joivan Wade as Rigsy, who, erm… last saw the Doctor much more recently (last year, in fact). Poor old Rigsy called upon Team TARDIS for help when he discovered a mysterious tattoo counting down to his untimely demise which meant that it was time for our heroes to Face the Raven by journeying to a magical alien world that probably reminded you of Harry Potter. Unfortunately, not everybody would get out alive…

So, that was Face the Raven and this is where you can tell us what you thought of it! There were shocks and surprises around every hidden corner but were you ultimately impressed by Sarah Dollard’s Whoniversal debut? After that cliffhanger, it’s now full steam ahead as we countdown to Heaven Sent, but what will lie in store for the Doctor in the first chapter of this year’s highly anticipated series finale? We have no idea, but we’re terrified already…
