It is Christmas Day on a remote human colony, and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas carols and comedy antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy. King Hydroflax is furious, and his giant robot bodyguard is out of control and coming for them all! Will Nardole survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is? All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time.
Ah, it only feels like yesterday that the Doctor was defying the laws of time and space to save Clara from her untimely but inevitable demise. Ok, so it was three weeks ago. Cut to Christmas Day and our beloved hero is back on TV screens to light up our holidays in his eleventh (count ‘em!) annual festive adventure to date. Where does he find the energy?!
Luckily for Peter Capaldi, a familiar face was on hand this year to help him get his second seasonal escapade off to a flying start. There was a blast from the past (or the present, or the future… to be honest, we don’t know where the hell she’s from anymore!) as he shared the spotlight with none other than River Song herself, who was reinstated to her “kick ass hero” glory after her last appearance as a hologram in 2013’s The Name of the Doctor.
And it was about time, too! Following Series 9’s dark and devastating final episodes (and, admittedly, Series 9 in general!), a light-hearted comedy caper featuring the return of one of the show’s most popular characters was exactly what the Doctor ordered. Even comedic geniuses Greg Davies and Matt Lucas came along for the rip-roaring ride which transported us on board a starliner full of galactic super-villains for a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy. Well, it is Christmas. So, that was The Husbands of River Song and this is where you can let us know what you thought of it! Was it a present worth unwrapping, or will you be banishing it to the forgotten realms of Christmas past? Let us know in the comments…

We’d just like to wish all of our visitors a very merry and safe Christmas!
Santa Claus sadly won’t be making an appearance in Doctor Who again this year (that we know of) but rest assured that he’ll still be stopping off at your house to deliver some Doctor Who goodies under your tree. That is, if you’ve been a well behaved Whovian this year. And yes, we’re looking at you.
Let us know what timey-wimey treats he leaves you in the comments section below!
Oh, and don’t forget that the best present of them all will finally be unwrapped at 5:15pm on BBC One in the form of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, The Husbands of River Song, featuring the return of everybody’s favourite kick ass hero. And the Doctor, of course. As always, we’ll be discussing the seasonal shenanigans from 6:15pm so be sure to come along and join the party, if you can pull yourself away from all of your new presents…
In the meantime, enjoy your day of celebrations and, most importantly, don’t do anything the Doctor wouldn’t do. You’d better stay away from the time and space continuum, then!
Ho ho ho, sweeties! Unwrap the latest news about this year’s Christmas Special…
As we await tomorrow night’s premiere of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, The Husbands of River Song, there’s just enough time to reveal which of the Doctor’s past festive escapades has been voted as your favourite (so far)!
Our beloved hero has embarked on 10 seasonal adventures to date and he even managed to encounter Santa Claus in last year’s yuletide jaunt, Last Christmas, which culminated in a majestic sleigh ride over London and a journey to the North Pole itself. Sort of. It doesn’t get more Christmassy than that, but not even Father Christmas could secure your support.
In fact, on the night before Christmas Day we’re turning back the clock to 2005 when the timey-wimey traditions began in The Christmas Invasion. Doctor Who’s first Christmas Special, and David Tennant’s first full-length episode in role as the Tenth Doctor, has been named as the greatest so far with 19.8% of the vote. The whole of mankind fell under the shadow of the alien Sycorax and, as it turns out, you were loving every minute of it. Well, there were robot Santas, killer trees and satsumas. What more could you possibly want?
In at a very close second with 18.5% was 2010’s A Christmas Carol, which won our poll last year and will stand the test of time as an absolute classic. Let’s face it, though, they’re all classics. And it’s almost time to do it all over again! Thanks to everyone who voted and we hope you all have a very Merry Christmas, sweeties! Check out the full results below…
Your Favourite Doctor Who Christmas Special – The Results
2. A Christmas Carol (2010) (18.5%)

Peter Capaldi has been cryptically discussing the new Doctor Who companion in a recent interview with What’s on TV.
Discussing this year’s Christmas Special, The Husbands of River Song, the Twelfth Doctor also briefly looked to the future by teasing that he may already know the identity of the actor or actress who will be joining him in Series 10. “There are no hints about the next companion in the Christmas Special, as far as I’m aware of,” he said. “But that doesn’t mean that I haven’t met them yet. I just don’t know what the outcome of it all is.”
There is now a vacancy aboard the TARDIS following the departure of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald at the end of Series 9, with showrunner Steven Moffat recently suggesting that the next coveted co-star will be “somebody new” who is also “a little more earthy”.

Alex Kingston has revealed that she was “thrilled” when she was invited to guest star in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special.
Discussing her surprise festive comeback, the actress candidly admitted that she was also “quite surprised” to get the call. “I was happy to do it because I knew it would be great fun,” she said. “River has become so beloved by fans who are always saying that it would be great to see her interacting with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. So I was thrilled when Steven decided that he wanted to explore that, too.”
Not only does the “kick ass hero” take a co-starring role in the episode (“She gets to do an awful lot!”), she has also managed to claim its title, with the seasonal jaunt intriguingly named The Husbands of River Song. She teased: “It’s a wonderful slapstick caper with lots of laughs and great one-liners. There is fabulous quick-fire dialogue between her and the Doctor, plus she runs around in the snow and snogs handsome men. So it’s all going on!”

River Song will be returning to Doctor Who this Christmas to light up our screens in what looks set to be one of the show’s best festive adventures to date.
A yuletide visit from TV’s favourite Time Lord has now become as traditional as turkey, carols and crackers, with his seasonal outings dating all the way back to his 21st century televisual return in 2005. It’s hard to believe that we’ve now had over a decade of timey-wimey fun and frolics that all began in The Christmas Invasion, with plenty of shocks, surprises, killer Snowmen (plus the odd CyberKing!) along the way.
With The Husbands of River Song fast approaching, we thought we’d take a trip down memory lane to relive some of the greatest moments from Christmas past. Which Special evokes the biggest sense of nostalgia for you? Which has been your favourite to date? Let us know by voting on the home page and we’ll be revealing the results on Christmas Eve.
