Matt Smith has revealed that Amy and Rory will bow out of Doctor Who “heroically” in Saturday’s episode.
The actor told TV Guide that The Angels Take Manhattan features “wonderful twists” and notes New York serves as “a great backdrop” to the story. “I’ve showed my mum some of the rushes of the last couple of scenes, and she was in tears,” he said. “That’s a good sign. It is a fantastic farewell. I think it is a fitting end to two of our greatest companions. You sort of want to go with a bit of a bang, don’t you?”
He goes on to talk about his first day of filming with Karen Gillan – on 20th July 2009. “The first day we were on a beach,” he reminisced. “It was me and Karen looking slightly confused, going ‘Are we in Doctor Who now? How did this happen?’ It forced us to bond because we were both placed in this strange and mad situation. It was pouring down with rain, the tide was coming in and suddenly we were here making Doctor Who.”

Our celebration of the mighty Pond era is well underway as we gear up for The Angels Take Manhattan – and taking the third spot is a classic Rory moment from Series 6.
Amy and Rory’s 2011 adventures were as unpredictable and dramatic as a dinner date with a Dalek, and by the time the mid-series finale had arrived, Amy had been kidnapped to give birth to a half human/half Time Lord psychopath bent on destroying the Doctor. No biggy! Luckily for her, her devoted Lone Centurion was on the case!

Arthur Darvill has revealed that he’s now eager to pursue a variety of acting roles now that he has left Doctor Who.
The actor told TV Choice that he has got “a vague plan” for where he wants his career to go next… “I want to play some horrible people, and I want to do some comedy,” he said. “I also want to go do some more theatre.” Next month he will take to the stage for the West End production of Our Boys at the Duchess Theatre. He has also been cast in a new 8-part ITV drama, Broadchurch, alongside David Tennant.
Also in the interview he looks back on his time portraying Rory Williams. He explained: “I can’t really conceive that I’ve even been in it yet. When we’re filming, we concentrate so much on making each moment good, then you see a big poster with your face on and it’s like, ‘Oh, that doesn’t quite compute in my mind.’. I don’t think it will hit any of us – all three of us really – until a few years out of it. It has been the best job I’ve ever had.”

Our countdown of Amy and Rory’s best moments – as voted for by you lovely lot – continues today… so let’s see what’s made it to fourth place shall we?
Everybody loves a wedding, especially one that’s been more than 2,000 years in the making! The fifth series ended in a good old fashioned knees-up when Amy and Rory *finally* tied the knot in The Big Bang. We were cordially invited to their happy day, but there was one raggedy guest missing – and the party don’t start ’til the Doctor walks in! Fact.
When the universe was reset, the Doctor was pulled out of existence – but if something can be remembered, it can come back. So his return all rested on The Girl Who Waited. Her reception realistion made for one of the Ponds’ most memorable moments to date…

This weekend we’ll be bidding a very tearful farewell to Amy and Rory, but we don’t want to get all bogged down in angst just yet, and we’re sure you don’t either!

Your votes have helped us determine their Top 5 Moments – so let’s get this show on the road! What’s in at #5?
Well, kicking off the proceedings is this memorable moment from the two-part US story, which set the bar for last year’s epic series. In Day of the Moon, Amy was kidnapped by the Silence – leaving it down to the Doctor and Rory to rush to her aid. She could still communicate to them via her nanorecorder, but which of her boys was she calling for…?

As the finale of this year’s series of Doctor Who approaches (already!?), it means it’s almost time to face another end.
They’ve been keeping the Doctor on his toes since 2010, but after all the cracks, deaths and doppelgangers, it is hard to believe that now just two episodes of the Pond era remain.
After their penultimate story airs on Saturday, we’ll be faced with a long week of anticipation as we prepare for their final outing in the long-awaited The Angels Take Manhattan…
…but we’ll be here to make those 7 days a tad more bearable, as we plan to spend their final week reliving some of the highs and lows (but mostly the highs) of their turbulent – but generally superb – time in the TARDIS. And we need your help to get things started!
So, to get the ball rolling, please share all your favourite Amy and Rory moments in the comments. It can be a particular scene or a quote, a specific episode – anything at all from their tenure that sticks out in your mind. We will pick a handful of your suggestions and open up a poll straight after The Power of Three on Saturday night to determine their Top 5 moments, all of which we’ll feature on the site over the course of next week.
You can also tweet us your best memories @WhovianNet. Don’t let yours be forgotten!

Arthur Darvill’s recently revealed that he doesn’t have any doubts about leaving Doctor Who as he admits it feels “like the right time to move on” from life in the TARDIS.
The actor will bow out as Rory, alongside Karen Gillan as his on screen wife Amy, in Episode 5 of the current series, The Angels Take Manhattan. “We have had such a great run and great episodes,” he told Blastr, “but the worst thing you can do is outstay your welcome. The whole show is about to change – it’s a show about change and evolution.”
He teased that the Ponds final episode is “weepy” (no pun intended?) and promised “a lot of surprises” adding: “It is great TV. I’m really proud of the work that we put into it.”
Arthur’s next port of call will be in the West End – he will be appearing in Our Boys by Jonathan Lewis which opens at the Duchess Theatre next month. See its trailer below:
