The actress, known (but perhaps not totally understood) and loved by Doctor Who fans as the irreplaceable River Song, is 50 today, and we hope she enjoys her celebrations!
We last saw her as River in The Angels Take Manhattan, but who knows if she’ll be popping up again soon?* Feel free to leave your own birthday messages in the comments.
To celebrate her birthday, here’s one of River’s greatest moments to date. Hold on tight!

It is Christmas Eve 1892 and there is a chilling menace threatening Earth. An unorthodox young governess, Clara, calls upon the Doctor for help, but the Doctor is in mourning. Will he abandon humankind, or save Christmas?
A brand new companion, a brand new TARDIS and brand new titles. It’s brand new Who!
Yep, it is that time of year again – the halls are decked with boughs of holly, Santa has been to deliver the goods, the crackers have been pulled and, of course, the Doctor is in. This year there was more than the usual chill in the air as we returned to the TARDIS (albeit a somewhat different one) to meet the Doctor on his latest seasonal escapade…
We rejoined our favourite Time Lord in Victorian England where he was still struggling to deal with the heartbreaking events of The Angels Take Manhattan. The Doctor might have been taking time out from battling aliens, but unfortunately the aliens had different ideas, as aliens often do, as mankind relied on a Christmas miracle to change his ways.
That Christmas miracle came in the form of Clara Oswald, the Doctor’s new plucky and “mysterious” companion who accompanied him on a festive mission to bring down the terrifying Doctor Simeon and his army of killer snowmen, with a little help from Vastra & Co of course! But was Clara’s debut (well, we say ‘debut’!) adventure worth the waiting?
There was no time like the present (Get it? ‘Present’!) for the Doctor as he hopped from the clouds to save Christmas, finding himself entwined in a brand new mystery along the way. How do you rate The Snowmen? Were you sat in awe as the new TARDIS interior was revealed on screen for the first time? And what about the new titles, too? Is Clara shaping up to be a top notch companion? There’s lots to discuss, and one place to do it…

Matt Smith has revealed that we’ll see a different side to the Eleventh Doctor in next month’s Christmas Special.
Chatting on Steve Wright in the Afternoon this week the actor teased that his character is still coming to terms with losing Amy and Rory in The Angels Take Manhattan. “It is set in Victorian England,” he said. “We meet a Doctor who has been profoundly changed by losing the Ponds. Into his life walks Jenna-Louise Coleman’s character, and off they go on new adventures!”
He added that he continues to be surprised by Steven Moffat’s writing, explaining: “He is a complete genius, he really is. I just read Episode 1 of the next series and there’s some brilliant ideas. There is a moment in it involving two wheels. It is just him being brilliant.”
A preview of the “magic” festive ep will be shown during Children in Need next Friday.

To celebrate the release of Series 7: Part 1 on DVD/Blu-ray today, we want to know your favourite moments so far!
Although it was only five episodes, you can’t deny there was plenty of twists, turns and drama. When the Doctor returned in Asylum of the Daleks, he found himself facing off with every Dalek ever in a soufflé story of epic proportions. Then Team TARDIS encountered Dinosaurs on a Spaceship – and the Doctor encountered… Rory’s dad! Next up, a trip to A Town Called Mercy introduced us to the Gunslinger…
Back on Earth, it was the ‘Year of the Slow Invasion’ in The Power of Three, and then the moment we’d all been dreading arrived as Amy and Rory’s Raggedy Man adventures reached their bittersweet end in The Angels Take Manhattan. And so the nation wept.
So, although it was short but sweet there’s plenty of highlights to choose from! Discuss…

The BBC has released the latest BBC iPlayer Peformance Pack, which reveals that Doctor Who dominated the online service throughout September 2012!
The 5 new episodes that aired last month all feature in the Top 10 most requested TV shows – with Series 7’s opening episode, Asylum of the Daleks, taking the first place with 2,190,000 requests. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship is number two with 1,771,000 watches, while The Power of Three is, rather fittingly, in at #3 with 1,350,000 requests.
A Town Called Mercy was viewed 1,345,000 times, and 913,000 people caught up with the Ponds’ exit in The Angels Take Manhattan, which takes 7th place. Adding these figures to the TV audience shares, Series 7: Part 1 averaged 7.96 million in the UK. It has also been a worldwide success, setting records for the US, Canada and Australia…

Amy and Rory may have left the TARDIS but there is plenty of Pond action to go round in the original audiobooks!
Next month marks the release of Sleepers in the Dust, by Darren Jones, in which the TARDIS journeys to Nadurniss, a world under quarantine. The exclusive story, read by Arthur Darvill, follows a joint Nadurni/human mission which has set out to survey the planet for possible re-colonisation. It has been 2 millennia since the Empire fell at the end of the War, but a mysterious illness is still infecting the Nadurni…
A shambling mound of bacteria, a Prokarian, has been on the planet all along, sleeping in the dust, and when they attack, Amy Pond is infected. The Doctor can do nothing to help her, until he realises that the main cure could lie more than 2,000 years in the past.
Sleepers in the Dust is released on 1st November 2012, RRP £9.25. It will be followed by the Ponds’ final audiobook story, Snake Bite by Scott Handcock, out on 6th December.
