doctor-who-countdown-6-days-to-go

As the countdown to Series 6 continues, today we’re looking at Episode 2, Day of the Moon, which forms part two of the opening US adventure!

In the story, written by Steven Moffat and directed by Toby Haynes, the Doctor is locked inside the perfect prison while Amy, Rory and River Song are being hunted down across America by the FBI. They are reunited with the help of their new friend, FBI-insider Canton Everett Delaware the Third, played by Mark Sheppard.

The Doctor is locked in the perfect prison. Amy, Rory and River Song are being hunted down across America by the FBI. With the help of new friend and FBI-insider, Canton Everett Delaware the Third, our heroes are reunited to share their discoveries, if not their memories. For the world is occupied by an alien force who control humanity through post-hypnotic suggestion and no one can be trusted. Aided by President Nixon and Neil Armstrong’s foot, the Doctor must mount a revolution to drive out the enemy and rescue the missing little girl. No-one knows why they took her. Or why they have kidnapped Amy Pond…

From the synopsis alone it’s safe to say that the conclusion to the US story will be just as epic as Part 1, but what are your hopes for Episode 2? Got anything to say about the adventure? A full moon blown theory or a half moon hearted thought? Let us know…

steven-moffat-previews-the-new-series-in-radio-times

As well as sporting a great Doctor Who cover, this week’s issue of Radio Times also features an exclusive Series 6 episode guide written by Steven Moffat himself!

For anyone who hasn’t managed to get their copy yet, the magazine has posted an extract from the feature on their site, in which the showrunner describes the opening US two-parter, The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, as “bigger, bolder” and “madder” than previous series premieres…

Episodes 1/2: The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon
Writer: Steven Moffat Director: Toby Haynes
Guest stars: Alex Kingston, Mark Sheppard, Stuart Milligan

For the first time since the show came back, we’re starting with a two-parter.

I said to our genius director Toby Haynes (The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang and A Christmas Carol), “Start like it’s the finale”, and my God, that’s just what he’s done. I’m not sure Doctor Who has ever felt bigger, bolder or madder. The Doctor, Amy, Rory and River in the Valley of the Gods, Nixon’s White House, Area 51 and a strangely familiar spaceship. Oh, and there’s Alex Kingston diving backwards off a skyscraper.

Look, what else do you want from your television? Well, monsters, I expect. And oh, we’ve got monsters. The Silence, revealed at last. And I’d like to tell you about them. I really would. But I can’t – I just can’t. You’ll see.

You can read his full preview of the spring series (Episodes 1-7), as well as an interview with Matt Smith, inside the magazine, which is out now. Also included inside are the new images released today, one of which confirms the return of the Cybermen!

Today it was announced that Series 6 will begin on Saturday 23rd April at 6pm.

round-up-of-latest-doctor-who-and-torchwood-news

The last few days have been eventful ones for both the Doctor Who and Torchwood universes, and if you’ve found yourself lost along the way, read on for our round up!

First up, Series 6 of Doctor Who was previewed to the press on Monday night to immensely positive reviews. At the event, Matt Smith spoke to both BBC News and BBC Radio Five Live about the new adventures, and Karen Gillan also promised that there is a major revelation about Amy to come. Could it have anything to do with that question?

Although not all of us could enjoy the premiere in person, we can all enjoy the new promo, character headshots, plot details and press pack that were subsequently released online. We also got new interviews with Steven Moffat, who promised “no easy answers” in Series 6, and Mark Sheppard, who also took part in a Doctor Who panel alongside Neil Gaiman and Toby Haynes at WonderCon at the weekend.

US fans were also given exciting news with the announcements that Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will be signing copies the Series 5 boxset in New York this coming Friday afternoon. They’ll also be attending the free Series 6 US premiere screening - alongside Alex Kingston and Steven Moffat - in the city on Monday night.

Now on to all things Torchwood, and followers of Jack and Gwen were this week treated to a new poster for Series 4 bearing the tagline: “Death is not an option”. The first official Miracle Day still also surfaced online, and John Barrowman spoke about the new series to Deadline during his time at the MIPTV conference in Cannes.

Phew! Doctor Who returns on 23rd April, and Torchwood will premiere worldwide in July.

mark-sheppard-discusses-fantastic-us-two-parter

The Baltimore Sun has posted a new interview with Mark Sheppard, in which he shares a few teasers about Series 6’s “fantastic” opening US adventure.

“Steven is going to be responsible for a lot of childrens’ sleepless nights, and adults’ sleepless nights,” the actor, who will be seen as Canton Everett Delaware III in the two-parter, teased. “I think you’re going to be more than pleasantly surprised by the scope and size and the scale of the episodes. The story is fantastic.”

He said: “There’s a thing about the Doctor, as Canton has to experience. He’s the kind of person who makes decisions and you have to trust him. He’s the man you follow. The question for Canton is, is he interested in what this Doctor has to say?”

He went on to describe his time filming the two episodes as an “amazing experience”.

interesting-tidbits-from-doctor-who-wondercon-panel

The Doctor Who panel with Neil Gaiman, Mark Sheppard and Toby Haynes took place at the WonderCon convention in San Francisco today, and various coverage from the Q&A has started appearing online!

Firstly, Assignment X have quotes from Gaiman discussing his episode, The Doctor’s Wife. The writer explained that the story – which he revealed was originally going to be Episode 11 of Series 5 – was moved to Series 6 so that “there would be enough budget to make it properly”.

“At the time it made me sad but it now makes me happy because I have Rory in it, who didn’t exist in Episode 11 of the last season,” he said. ”Getting to write for Arthur Darvill and dialogue between him and Amy and the Doctor is so much fun.”

He went on to reveal that his story will be a rollercoaster of an adventure, promising a host of ”funny stuff and scary stuff and exciting stuff and heartbreaking stuff”, as well as lots of “running down corridors”, which is surely a given for any Doctor Who episode!

He admitted: “This may be my only opportunity to ever write an episode of Doctor Who, so I’m going to put everything I’ve ever loved about Doctor Who into this one episode. The whole of Doctor Who began in a junkyard, so I thought, let’s start it in a junkyard! I got to put everything into the episode that I love about Doctor Who.”

Plus, from what we know, River Song is to be an ominous figure throughout the new series, and interestingly Gaiman teased that his episode is “almost” a River-free one…

Elsewhere, io9 has posted details of two new clips that were shown! The first is from the opening US based two-parter, while the second is taken from Episode 4. Spoilers!

They’ve also revealed more of Gaiman’s intriguing words, including him sharing one of his favourite moments from his episode. “Amy tells Rory off for leaving the Doctor, and Rory says, ‘He’s a Time Lord, he’ll be fine.’ She looks at Rory with infinite compassion and says, ‘It’s just what they’re called. It doesn’t mean he knows what he’s doing’”…

…and a nice little quote from director Toby Haynes to finish! “I was making Doctor Who when I was a kid, about sticky plastic and bits of sellotape, and I’m still doing that.”

mark-sheppard-to-appear-in-series-6-next-year

It has been confirmed that Mark Sheppard will be appearing in Doctor Who next year.

The actor, whose television credits include The X-Files, 24 and Star Trek: Voyager, was forced to pull out of his scheduled appearance at the US Valleycon convention this weekend due to filming commitments for his role in Series 6. This suggests he will be guest-starring in Episodes 1 and 2, the two-part opener directed by Toby Haynes, which will be partly filmed in the Utah desert.

The story, written by Steven Moffat, will see the Doctor, Amy and Rory “on a secret summons” to the Oval Office, and will also mark the return of Alex Kingston as River.

We’ve got lots to look forward to – and you can keep up to date with it all right here!
