Murray Gold has revealed that he enjoys penning the music for the more emotionally charged Doctor Who storylines the most, admitting that he is “definitely trying to make people cry” when he sits down to write his scores.
In an interview with The Australian, which took place prior to yesterday’s concert of the series music which was held in Melbourne, the composer explained: “I don’t plan to write motifs for each of the characters, but it just worked out that way. But we were definitely trying to make people cry.”
He also discusses his ideal work environment. “I don’t speak to anyone at all when I am writing,” he said. “I prefer just to work on my own and then be as creative as possible.”
Which of Murray’s Doctor Who scores break your heart? Let us know in the comments…
This weekend a host of familiar enemies will be taking to the stage in Australia in a Doctor Who live show extravaganza – the first to take place outside of the UK!
The concert, hosted by Series 6 guest star Mark Sheppard, will take place at the Plenary Hall, Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, as Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ben Foster, peform an array of Murray Gold’s music from the last 2 series, as a celebration of Matt Smith’s portrayal of the Eleventh Doctor so far.
Specially edited videos will play out on the big screen, as iconic foes, such as the Daleks and Judoon, invade the auditorium. It wouldn’t be a celebration of the show without ‘em!
“Doctor Who’s such a fantastic show,” Mark said. “The music’s been a key component in its success. It is instantaneously identifiable and spine-tingling. I cannot wait to hear the sounds of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – and the TARDIS – filling Plenary Hall…”
The Managing Director of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Matthew Van Besien, added: “The response from the Australian public to this concert has been overwhelming. I know the Orchestra is looking forward to being part of this world famous production.”

As Eve Myles continues to do the promotional rounds for her new play, All New People, she also continues to be asked about the future of Torchwood now that Miracle Day’s over.
In her latest interview, with Den of Geek, the Gwen actress reaffirms her recent comments that the series remains “in limbo” rather than over. “I know that Russell has put out his situation at the moment, so things have been on hold for a while. That’s all I know,” she explains. “So things have been on hold, but there’s no closure on it at all at the moment.”
She goes on to echo her hopes for a movie next year, commenting: “I imagine it’ll be a screen release in 2013. Then, that would be the end of a massive chapter for us all. The fans, Russell, Julie, me, John. It’d close it. We appreciate our fans too much, the support they have given us from day one. And I know that they also mean the world to Russell.”

She finishes by admitting that she doesn’t see Gwen being killed off in any future story. “Every year you’re expecting to turn to page 16, and go, oh I’ve been shot in the face,” she admits. “But I think they’ve really developed her into this fantastic everyday hero, so I don’t think that it’d be right to take someone like Gwen Cooper out of the equation.”
A Doctor Who fan called Matt Smith (what are the chances?) proposed to his girlfriend at the Doctor Who Experience in London last night!
His long-standing partner, Stacie-Anne, had the shock of her life when he appeared from out of an exhibit wearing a bow tie and tweed jacket, and got down on one knee to pop the life-changing question.
The Doctor himself has sent his personal congratulations:
“Matt Smith proposing to his girlfriend! Being a Smith means that phone calls to the bank take so much longer. There are so many Smiths! But I bet none of them have proposed at the Doctor Who Experience! Amy and Rory would be proud. Next – babies in the TARDIS…? Congratulations to you both. Love, Matt.”
We would also like to say a a huge congratulations to the couple and wish them the best!
The Doctor Who Experience will be leaving London soon to relocate to Cardiff, and so a series of special activities has been planned for its final week. Read more about it here.
Tune into BBC3 over the weekend, as they’ll be continuing their repeats of David Tennant’s first series.
Tonight on the channel, the Doctor, Rose, Mickey and Sarah Jane investigate a London school being haunted by strange, bat-like creatures in School Reunion from 7pm, followed by an attack from sinister clockwork killers in The Girl in the Fireplace at 7:45pm. Tomorrow night, at 7pm, the TARDIS is trapped on a parallel Earth, and just in time to witness the Rise of the Cybermen. Prepare to be deleted!
You can catch up with the early adventures on BBC iPlayer. Feels like only yesterday…
The interactive show will be at the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich from 15th June-8th July as part of the London 2012 festival for the Olympics. It was developed by Punchdrunk and written by Tom MacRae, who has recently spoken to the East Anglian Daily Times about what fans can expect to experience during the “unforgettable” adventure.
“You are not watching the show, you’re in it,” he described. “You don’t enter a room and get kept behind a barrier where you can’t go and touch the Daleks. Here, you have full access to the world you walk into. You are in your own episode where you are the star.”

Alex Kingston’s a guest on The Graham Norton Show this week, and during it she’s quizzed on River’s future in Doctor Who.
The actress, who’ll soon be appearing as Blanche in the new series of Upstairs Downstairs, remained as secretive as ever about a potential return to the TARDIS, teasing: “You may see her again. Who knows?” Filming for Series 7, which has been described as “the biggest series ever”, begins in Cardiff later this month.
She added: “Let’s say, Upstairs Downstairs and Doctor Who don’t film at the same time.”
You can catch Alex’s full interview with Graham tomorrow night on BBC1 from 10:35pm.

Eve Myles has told the Metro that she is “eternally grateful” to Torchwood for everything it has given her.
“Torchwood’s taken me from Cardiff to London and LA,” she explained. “The high is the response from the fans. There is no bigger high. Meeting people who are so loyal to the show gives you such a massive boost.”
She also discusses the future of the spin off, commenting: “I just know John and I would agree to do more episodes.”
The Gwen actress recently revealed that she would like to see a movie adaptation of the series “to draw a line under it”. She will soon be taking to the West End stage in All New People, starring alongside Zach Braff. “I had wanted to do a stage play for a long time,” she said. “I’m excited to be returning in a comedy. I’ve never done one before.”
