the-stars-of-series-9-the-results

It’s almost time to bid a fond farewell to 2015 but our festivities just wouldn’t be complete without revealing the winners of our Doctor Who Awards.

All this month you’ve been supporting your Stars of Series 9 and now, on New Year’s Eve, your votes (over 2,500 of ‘em – thanks to everyone who voted!) have been counted and verified and we’re very excited to bring you the all-important results.

So, without much further ado, here are your Stars of Series 9.

BEST ACTOR: Peter Capaldi – The Doctor (85%)

Well, this one was basically a given. Series 9 boasted a glistening line up of guest actors but there’s only one man calling the shots whenever the Twelfth Doctor is in town. Hint: He’s Scottish and looks great in a pair of Sonic Sunglasses. And it’s not Steven Moffat. Soz.

In fact, a landslide 85% of your votes have named the titular Time Lord himself as 2015’s Best Actor, thanks to his praised portrayal of everybody’s favourite mad man in a box which he has well and truly made his own since his first televised outing in Deep Breath. And even a bit before that, after he made a blink and you’ll miss it appearance in the 50th anniversary special. It’s all about the eyebrows, folks. And don’t you ever forget it, ok?

SECOND PLACE: Julian Bleach (Davros) – 5%
THIRD PLACE: Rufus Hound (Sam Swift) – 3%

BEST ACTRESS: Bethany Black – 474 (33%)

It was all about the girls in Series 9 as Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams made her highly anticipated debut as the mysterious Ashildr, while Michelle Gomez was also back – and, it has to be said, with an almighty vengeance – as everybody’s favourite renegade Time Lady, Missy.

Let’s not forget Jenna Coleman, of course, who faced her final curtain call when her alter ego, Clara Oswald, bid her last adieu with the Doctor after four incredible years. The impossible girl just missed out on your pick for this year’s Best Actress (seriously, it was incredibly close!) which means that congratulations are in order for Bethany Black who guest starred as 474 in Mark Gatiss’ terrifying ‘found footage’ episode Sleep No More. Bring me a dream, indeed.

SECOND PLACE: Jenna Coleman – Clara Oswald (32%)
THIRD PLACE: Michelle Gomez – Missy (22%)

BEST OVERALL EPISODE: Heaven Sent (41%)

No surprises there, then! Steven Moffat had reservations that he’d set himself a “ludicrous challenge” in Series 9’s penultimate episode, but your votes suggest that it was one that ultimately paid off. Phew.

The premise of Heaven Sent sounded exciting enough on paper, but seeing it realised under the distinctive direction of Rachel Talalay was like nothing we’d ever seen before. The Doctor was trapped in a world unlike any he had seen and, as he faced one final test, what followed made for the most exhilarating 55 minutes in Doctor Who history. Seriously. It got real tense, real quick.

In fact, it’s a shame that every episode can’t be a one hander with Peter Capaldi, but even the grand old man from time and space deserves a break from the spotlight sometimes. We’ll let him off… this time.

SECOND PLACE: Hell Bent (17%)
THIRD PLACE: Face the Raven (8%)

BEST WRITER: Steven Moffat (57%)

Steven Moffat gets some stick (OK, he gets a lot of stick!), but he’s clearly doing something right because 57% of you have chosen him as the Best Writer of 2015.

One of his main duties as Doctor Who’s showrunner is kicking off each series – which he did spectacularly in this year’s two-part premiere, The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar – and ensuring that it all ends in one cataclysmic showcase of timey-wimey chaos and confusion. Again, that’s pretty much Heaven Sent and Hell Bent in a nutshell. We needed to lie down.

Oh, he’s also responsible for plotting out the rest of the series, too, which means that he literally has the fate of the Doctor Who universe in his hands. No pressure. So, love him or hate him, you can’t deny that the Moff’s got style. An award from WhovianNet isn’t exactly the BAFTA he’s used to, but (hopefully) it’s the next best thing. Oh, who are we kidding? It’s totally better. You’re welcome.

SECOND PLACE: Peter Harness (13%)
THIRD PLACE: Sarah Dollard (11%)

BEST DIRECTOR: Rachel Talalay (70%)

Directing Doctor Who is no mean feat, but helming two of its most eagerly anticipated episodes is sure to keep you up at night. Thankfully, your best director has got it more than covered.

After making her Whoniversal debut with last year’s series finale, Dark Water and Death in Heaven, in which Missy’s true identity was finally revealed, Rachel Talalay returned with bells on to call the shots for Series 9’s climactic conclusion, the first part of which took place in a secluded castle and starred only Peter Capaldi, and the second part of which was set on… well, Gallifrey itself. Just another day in the office, then.

Rachel more than delivered, of course, as she effortlessly transported viewers from the claustrophobic confines of Heaven Sent to the intergalactic spectacle of Hell Bent (the long way round), making her more than deserving of this year’s Best Director title. And cut.

SECOND PLACE: Hettie Macdonald (10%)
THIRD PLACE: Justin Molotnikov (7%)

BEST VILLAIN: Davros (58%)

Series 9 boasted its fair share of formidable foes but, as it turns out, it’s the familiar ones that got your Whovian hearts into an unprecedented fluster.

Let’s face it, though, the concept of a new Doctor coming face to face with Davros – Lord Creator of the Daleks – is always an exciting one, and his shock return in the opening moments of the two-part premiere would’ve come as a complete surprise if it hadn’t been ruined by the Daily Star a few months earlier. Damn you and the paper you’re printed on.

Sometimes tabloids do get stuff right (who knew?), and they were right about The Magician’s Apprentice/The Witch’s Familiar being one of the show’s “darkest plots ever”, too, as the Doctor’s past came back to haunt him and cataclysmic repercussions awaited him in the sinister shadows of Skaro itself. The old ones are the best.

SECOND PLACE: The Veil (15%)
THIRD PLACE: The Zygons (13%)

BEST CLIFFHANGER: Heaven Sent (46%)

One of the most exciting/frustrating things about Doctor Who is that you never really know what’s coming next, and this was taken to the next level throughout Series 9 with pretty much every single episode ending on a climactic cliffhanger. It was all fun and games in retrospect, but at the time it just left us all wondering how on Earth we were going to get through the next 7 days without knowing how the hell the Doctor was going to get out of that one. Like Under the Lake, for example. That was just plain cruel.

There were plenty of ‘doof doof’ moments (sorry, that’s EastEnders, isn’t it?) to choose from when it came to voting for 2015’s Best Cliffhanger, but once again you’ve backed Series 9’s penultimate episode which is sure to stand the test of time, not only for it’s innovate premise, but for it’s final scene, too. Gallifrey had returned, the Doctor was back, and this time… it was personal. It took him billions of years, but he got there in the end. There’s no place like home.

SECOND PLACE: Face the Raven (18%)
THIRD PLACE: Under the Lake (13%)

Summer was just around the corner, the days were getting longer, and the Doctor was, unfortunately, still nowhere to be seen.

Anticipation surrounding Series 9 was reaching fever pitch as we entered the second half of 2015, with our beloved Time Lord finally returning to our screens – the long way round – in September. Peter Capaldi’s second string of adventures were just the tip of the timey-wimey iceberg, though, as July-December brought us plenty of other surprises, including the announcement of a brand new Doctor Who spin off.

Reflect on the best moments that 2015 had to offer in the second half of our Year in Review. It’s been an absolute blast and we can’t wait to see what 2016 will have to offer.

July (WhovianNet news posts: 17)

Honestly, you wait months and months for one scrap of Series 9 news, and then all of this comes along at once! Entertainment Weekly teased that “cataclysmic repercussions” awaited the Doctor when the first picture from the Series 9 two-part premiere surfaced online, and fans finally found out exactly when they’d be able to enjoy it when it was confirmed at the end of the first full-length trailer (and oh, what a trailer it was!) that the TARDIS would be back in business on Saturday 19th September. Let the countdown commence!

Meanwhile, the Doctor Who cast and crew descended on San Diego Comic Con, the Time Lord took on a new dimension in the first LEGO trailer and Torchwood fans were deservedly thrilled to discover that Ianto Jones would be making his long awaited return in Big Finish’s new audio range. It only took him 6 years!

August (WhovianNet news posts: 13)

With Series 9 just around the corner, anticipation was already reaching fever pitch as the BBC unveiled an explosive poster as well as a second heart-stopping trailer featuring previously unseen clips from the Twelfth Doctor’s second string of adventures. Missy and Maisie and dragons, oh my!

Naturally, the man himself was revealed as this month’s Doctor Who Magazine cover star to prove that he and Missy will always be the very best of enemies (n’awww!), and he also appeared on SFX’s regeneration issue which boasted an exclusive preview of his forthcoming escapades. Was it September yet?!

Also in August, Series 9 added another glamorous guest star in the form of Reece Shearsmith as rumours mounted that the show would be taking another hiatus in 2016 (producing only a handful of sporadic “specials”) to accommodate a behind the scenes overhaul. Interestingly, the BBC declined to comment. Which is so unlike them.

September (WhovianNet news posts: 19)

The moment had finally arrived! Having last appeared on our screens on Christmas Day 2014, the Twelfth Doctor and Clara finally returned in The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar, which were watched by official audiences of 6.54 million and 5.71 million, respectively. The premiere of Series 9 was preceded by the release of an official prequel and prologue as the Daleks invaded the London Underground and Peter and Jenna took a leaf out of the Beatles’ book by recreating their iconic Abbey Road photo to promote their imminent televisual comeback. The moment had definitely been prepared for!

It wasn’t all good news, however. On the eve of the new series, the BBC announced that Jenna Coleman would be stepping down from her role as Clara Oswald after four spectacular years, leaving fans to speculate just when and how her final departure would play out. One thing was for sure, though, it was going to be “emotional”! Meanwhile, Christmas came early in Cardiff as filming on this this Christmas Special officially commenced, accompanied by the announcement that Alex Kingston would be reprising her ever popular role as River Song.

October (WhovianNet news posts: 31)

The month of Hallowe’en kicked off with the extremely exciting announcement that 2016 will be bringing us a brand new Doctor Who spin off, Class, written and created by award-winning YA author Patrick Ness. Based in Coal Hill School, the 8-part BBC Three drama will follow a group of students whose lives are thrown upside down when incredible dangers break through the walls of time and space. It’s basically growing up… but with monsters. We’ve all been there, right?

Meanwhile, the first pictures of the official LEGO set materialised (and it was basically the best thing ever!) as the Doctor’s televisual adventures saw our heroes journey Under the Lake and Before the Flood before Maisie Williams made her anticipated debut in The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived. Next up, there were shape-shifting shenanigans around every corner and nobody could be trusted as one of the Doctor’s most iconic adversaries returned in The Zygon Inversion, but all the national press could talk about was Last Christmas guest star Faye Marsey who had emerged as the bookies’ favourite to be unveiled as the new Doctor Who companion.

And then Big Finish went and ripped the stratosphere of the fandom apart by announcing that David Tennant and Catherine Tate would be reprising their roles as the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble for a brand new audio series. Someone had been picking at our Christmas lists…

November (WhovianNet news posts: 47)

November went off with a bang for the Doctor and Clara in The Zygon Inversion before they faced a nightmare scenario in Sleep No More. As Clara prepared to Face the Raven, the Doctor Who Festival kicked off in London and there was yet more excitement for LEGO fans when it was claimed that the Doctor will be appearing in the LEGO Movie sequel in 2018. Everything is awesome!

Meanwhile, the Doctor faced his greatest challenge alone in Series 9’s penultimate episode, Heaven Sent, as Oscar winning Peter Jackson sent the fandom into a frenzy when he posted a cryptic video message suggesting that he’ll finally be directing Doctor Who. Christmas came a month early when the BBC unveiled the first picture from this year’s festive adventure and, looking even further into the future, Steven Moffat responded to ongoing speculation by affirming that Series 10 will be 13 episodes – including a Christmas Special – after all. Oh, and Peter Capaldi “is going nowhere”, too. Well, for another year, at least!

December (WhovianNet news posts: 27)

Christmas was coming, the goose was getting fat… and the Doctor was returning to Gallifrey once and for all. This year’s series reached its dramatic and “devastating” conclusion at the start of December as the Time Lord was Hell Bent on saving Clara Oswald from her untimely demise. Averaging 6.03 million viewers, Series 9 might’ve been over (don’t worry, you’ll be able to get the boxset on 7th March 2016!) but thankfully the TARDIS doors weren’t closed for long. Christmas Day saw Alex Kingston make her triumphant return in The Husbands of River Song which rounded off the year in spectacular style.

But what will 2016 have in store for the Doctor? Well, all we know for sure is that he definitely will be back (which is certainly better than knowing that he isn’t!) and Steven Moffat has already dropped some cryptic hints to suggest that Missy will also be returning in Series 10, which will also welcome two “prominent” new writers.  Oh, and the new companion, of course, which is pretty exciting. Peter Capaldi fans better make the most of it, too, as the man himself has hinted that it may be his “final year” at the helm of the TARDIS. As always, though, only time will tell. It always does.

Happy New Year to our visitors, and we wish you all the very best for 2016. What Doctor Who memories will you be taking with you from 2015? Let us know in the comments and read Part 1 of our Year in Review here.

And just like that, the end of 2015 is nigh.

It only feels like yesterday that we were welcoming in the new year, with Peter Capaldi’s second string of adventures as the Twelfth Doctor ahead of us, but time really does fly when you’re having fun because the TARDIS has just closed its doors on yet another epic series which can only be described as one of the biggest and most ambitious to date.

So, what next? Well, before we look to the future, it’s time to get nostalgic as we take a trip into the recent past.

2015 has been another fantastic year for Doctor Who and its fans and, although the series didn’t actually return to our screens until September, there was still plenty to keep our Whovian minds occupied in the meantime. Don’t believe us? Check out the first installment of our Year in Review, highlighting the biggest and most memorable news stories from January through to June, and see for yourself! There was definitely plenty to talk about.

January (WhovianNet news posts: 13)

Fresh from their New Year festivities, it was business as usual for the Doctor Who cast and crew in January as production officially commenced in Cardiff on Peter Capaldi’s second string of adventures as the Twelfth Doctor. Starting as they meant to go on, the first Series 9 episodes to be filmed were billed as “one of the scariest adventures yet” – Toby Whithouse’s Under the Lake and Before the Flood – as Doctor Who continued its reign of world domination with the announcement that Series 8 had secured record-breaking international ratings throughout 2014.

Meanwhile, Tenth Doctor star David Tennant was awarded a Special Recognition gong at the NTAs for his contributions to the stage and screen, and Torchwood fans were given a late Christmas present when it was announced that the BBC were planning a new range of audio adventures featuring Jack and Gwen, nearly 4 years since their last televisual outing in Miracle Day. But more on that later…

February (WhovianNet news posts: 16)

Romance was in the air in February with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, and Doctor Who fans young and old had already fallen in love with the long awaited LEGO set, which was finally unveiled at the start of the month. Unfortunately we’d have to wait until Christmas to get our hands on it, but there was still plenty to keep our minds occupied the meantime with Doctor Who’s various social media accounts teasing us with sporadic behind the scenes previews as the new series continued to take shape.

Acclaimed Blink director Hettie MacDonald returned to helm filming of this year’s two-part premiere in Tenerife where she was welcomed on set by another familiar face, Michelle Gomez, who was to make her already anticipated return as Missy following her surprise introduction as the first female incarnation of the Master in Series 8. There were certainly good times ahead!

March (WhovianNet news posts: 13)

March was a special month for Doctor Who fans as it marked the 10th anniversary of the revived series. As WhovianNet visitors chose Series 4 as their favourite NuWho series to date (with, it has to be said, a landslide majority of the vote!), the show’s incumbent stars, Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, attended the read-through for Episode 5 which was to guest star Game of Thrones alumni Maisie Williams as the titular ‘Girl Who Died’. Let the speculation begin!

Meanwhile, Big Finish’s license to produce Doctor Who audios was extended to 2020 as they announced Paul McGann’s latest return in Doom Coalition, a 16-part adventure which vowed to push the Eighth Doctor to his limits. Blimey.

April (WhovianNet news posts: 40)

WhovianNet kick started the month with our April Fool’s prank as we “exclusively” revealed that outgoing One Direction star Zayn Malik had been cast as the new Doctor Who companion. Gotcha! Elsewhere, the long-standing rumours of a Doctor Who movie were reignited when showrunner Steven Moffat affirmed that he was “reasonably confident” that the Time Lord will make it to the big screen one day, complemented by leaked emails between Sony and the BBC which exposed plans to bring the Time Lord to the big screen “within 8 years”.

As Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston shed further light on his infamous departure after just one series at the helm of the TARDIS, Doctor Who added yet another trophy to its now over-flowing cabinet when it was awarded a prestigious BAFTA for the Best Special, Visual & Graphic Effects. Meanwhile, BBC Worldwide signed a new partnership deal with FX to secure the Time Lord’s imminent arrival to over a million homes across India. Doctor Who was well and truly taking over the globe!

May (WhovianNet news posts: 39)

In the month that Fifth Doctor Peter Davison pondered a sequel to his acclaimed ‘Five-ish Doctors’ 50th anniversary spoof, it was also announced that the dreaded Zygons would be making a comeback in Series 9 alongside Ingrid Oliver as fan favourite Osgood. Most peculiar, since she died at the hands of Missy in the last series. Elsewhere, BBC Worldwide officially launched their new online web series, The Fan Show, fronted by YouTuber Christel Dee, and there was yet more Stateside success for former companion Karen Gillan who landed her latest movie role in The Big Short alongside Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell. She’ll always be Amy Pond to us!

Meanwhile, the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular hit the road, selling out arenas across the country, as the celebrations continued across the pond when BAFTA commemorated 10 years of revived Doctor Who at a special event in New York, where showrunner Steven Moffat announced that he’d be returning to helm Series 10 in 2016. You all had something to say about that, to put it lightly.

June (WhovianNet news posts: 29)

Doctor Who’s involvement in the forthcoming LEGO Dimensions game was announced at the start of the month, as Big Finish confirmed that they’d also be expanding their own universe with new audio spin offs starring River Song, Winston Churchill and a host of other familiar friends and foes. Meanwhile, Eleventh Doctor star Matt Smith joined the cast of a new Netflix original, The Crown, as the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Royal festivities continued as the Queen’s Birthday Honours included an OBE for Steven Moffat who was awarded the prestigious accolade for his ongoing services to drama.

The Minions invaded the TARDIS (let’s face it, it was only a matter of time…), old school fans were reassured by the news that the BBC were “hoping” to release more Classic Series adventures, and BBC America finally got the ball rolling by airing the first official teaser for Series 9, albeit it a very short and uneventful one. The Doctor was on his way!

What were you highlights from January-June 2015? Let us know in your comments below and stay tuned for Part 2 of our Year in Review, coming very soon!

Steven Moffat has dropped a cryptic hint to suggest that Missy will be returning to Doctor Who in 2016.

During a Q&A session recently, the showrunner revealed that fans “should definitely expect more from her in the future”, seemingly confirming that the renegade Time Lady will be back to fight another day in Series 10. Michelle Gomez was introduced as the first female incarnation of the Master during Series 8 before making her grand comeback in Series 9’s two-part premiere, The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar, earlier this year.

Steven also teased that a forthcoming Series 10 episode will be set on “an ancient world”.

jenna-talks-exit-admits-her-time-was-up

Jenna Coleman has revealed that she made the right decision to leave Doctor Who as she admitted that “her time was up” at the end of Series 9.

The actress bowed out as the Doctor’s longest serving revived series companion, Clara Oswald, in this year’s finale, Hell Bent, and told Interview Magazine - where she’s named as one of their 16 faces to look out for in 2016 – that she “had to let go and move forward”. “It felt like a natural end,” she said. “It made sense, and it made sense in a story sense. So I was willing to stay that extra year to tell a good story.”

She continued: “I went to Peter’s house with Steven Moffat to watch my final episode, so it was lovely to enjoy it together. The goodbye had been in the works for so long, so to have it done on screen now is quite strange, but also exhilarating. It has been a mad and weird and wonderful part of my life for the last four years, but it now feels like the next chapter.”

Jenna will next be seen on our screens as Queen Victoria in ITV’s major new 8-part drama series, depicting the early life of our longest serving monarch, which is now being filmed.

peter-says-series-10-could-be-his-final-year

Peter Capaldi has briefly discussed his future aboard the TARDIS by suggesting that 2016 “could be his final year” as the Twelfth Doctor.

Rumours that the actor would be bowing out of the iconic role at the end of Series 9 were squashed when it was confirmed that he’d be back for Series 10, to feature 12 episodes plus a Christmas Speecial, however the man himself has admitted that all good things must come to an end. “I love Doctor Who but it’s an insular world,” he said. “It’s terrifying to contemplate, but I want to do other things.”.

He continued: “There will, of course, come a time when this will all be over. But I knew that back when I started. I was already thinking about my regeneration scene from the outset.”

Peter was announced as the Time Lord in August 2013, making his televisual debut a year later in Deep Breath, and his first two series have both been a ratings success, averaging 7.4 million and 6.03 million viewers, respectively, as well as breaking records around the world. Filming on his third series is expected to commence in Cardiff in the new year.

…at some point in the future!

The TARDIS has closed its doors after last night’s premiere of The Husbands of River Song, but just when they’ll be back open again is.. well, your guess is as good as ours.

In fact, all we actually do know about Series 10 thus far is that it will definitely feature 12 episodes plus a Christmas Special (in your face, “gap year” rumours!), and that Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat are “going nowhere”… for one more year, at least. Hurrah!

It will introduce a new companion, too (a “more earthy” one, apparently), which is pretty exciting, and there’s even talks that Peter Jacksoon will be directing an episode as he seems pretty adamant on ripping the fabric of the Doctor Who world apart. In a good way.

As always, only time will tell… and you can bet your bottom dollar that WhovianNet will be right here to bring you all the news as and when it does! So, although we don’t know what the future holds at the moment, we can sleep easy with the knowledge that there are good times ahead. In the meantime, feel free to share your main hopes and dreams for the next series in the comments section below, and relive the best bits of Series 9 with our guides and episode discussions. The seasonal adventure, Peter Capaldi’s second as the Twelfth Doctor, is released on DVD and Blu-ray next month.

It is Christmas Day on a remote human colony, and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas carols and comedy antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy. King Hydroflax is furious, and his giant robot bodyguard is out of control and coming for them all! Will Nardole survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is? All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time.

Ah, it only feels like yesterday that the Doctor was defying the laws of time and space to save Clara from her untimely but inevitable demise. Ok, so it was three weeks ago. Cut to Christmas Day and our beloved hero is back on TV screens to light up our holidays in his eleventh (count ‘em!) annual festive adventure to date. Where does he find the energy?!

Luckily for Peter Capaldi, a familiar face was on hand this year to help him get his second seasonal escapade off to a flying start. There was a blast from the past (or the present, or the future… to be honest, we don’t know where the hell she’s from anymore!) as he shared the spotlight with none other than River Song herself, who was reinstated to her “kick ass hero” glory after her last appearance as a hologram in 2013’s The Name of the Doctor.

And it was about time, too! Following Series 9’s dark and devastating final episodes (and, admittedly, Series 9 in general!), a light-hearted comedy caper featuring the return of one of the show’s most popular characters was exactly what the Doctor ordered. Even comedic geniuses Greg Davies and Matt Lucas came along for the rip-roaring ride which transported us on board a starliner full of galactic super-villains for a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy. Well, it is Christmas. So, that was The Husbands of River Song and this is where you can let us know what you thought of it! Was it a present worth unwrapping, or will you be banishing it to the forgotten realms of Christmas past? Let us know in the comments…
